MERCHANT P. BUZZELL - Vol II, pg 586
Merchant P. Buzzell, president of the University State Bank, is one of the most
prominent and highly esteemed citizens of Minneapolis. He was born in St. Paul
on the 28th of January, 1885, a son of Luke W. and Kate (Heritage) Buzzell. The
father located in St. Paul in 1880 and he was actively engaged in the real
estate business thirty years. He achieved substantial success and is now living
retired at Moose Lake, Minnesota. To Mr. and Mrs. Buzzell two sons and two
daughters were born, Merchant P. being the eldest of the children.
Merchant P. Buzzell received his early education in the public schools of St.
Paul and later attended the Cleveland high school. After putting his textbooks
aside he accepted a position with the Great Northern Railroad in a clerical
capacity. At the end of a year he went into the hotel business at Moose Lake.
Later he engaged in the lumber business, conducting various lumber camps, and
about two years later he went to California with the W. F. Yates Lumber Company
of San Francisco. Returning to Minneapolis, he became associated with the H. G.
Foote Lumber Com­pany, with which he remained thirteen years. He made his
initial step into banking circles in 1915, assisting in the organization of the
University State Bank, of which he was made vice president on the 1st of
September, 1918. On the 1st of January, 1919, he was elected president of the
bank and has continued in this important capacity. Mr. Buzzell is also president
of the Glide Rood Machine Company, director of the Marquette Trust Company and
treasurer and manager of the University Invest­ment Company.
In St. Paul, on the 6th of October, 1914, was celebrated the marriage of Mr.
Buzzell and Miss Marjorie Clifford, a daughter of Horace Clifford, treasurer of
the Northern Pacific Railroad Company. Mr. and Mrs. Buzzell have one child,
Kenneth C.
The political endorsement of Mr. Buzzell is given to the republican party and
the principles for which it stands. Although he has never sought nor desired
political preferment, he is actively interested in party affairs and is well
versed on all impor­tant questions and issues of the day. His religious faith is
manifest in his member­ship in the Presbyterian church. He is secretary of the
St. Anthony Improvement Association and along strictly business lines holds
membership in the Minneapolis Chapter of the American Institute of Banking.
Socially he is identified with the Minneapolis Automobile Club, Minneapolis
Athletic Club and the Old Colony Club. During the World war Mr. Buzzell gave
generously of his time and money in the furtherance of the government's
interests and served on the Liberty Loan committee. He finds recreation in the
great outdoors and he spends much of his spare time in hunting, fishing,
motoring and camping.
