De MARS - Vol II, pg 394 Louis L. de Mars, a successful optometrist of Minneapolis, holds to high standards in his professional work and has become recognized throughout the Northwest as a leader in his chosen calling. He was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and acquired his early education in the public schools of Minneapolis. He then took up the study of optometry and was graduated from the Northern Illinois College, which later conferred upon him the honorary degree of Doctor of Ophthalmology. He established himself in business in Minneapolis as an optometrist and afterward opened a school of optometry at No. 622 Nicollet avenue in this city, which he successfully conducted for twenty-five years. He was at the head of this school, which was the only institution of its kind in the Northwest, but is no longer in existence. He is an able educator, keeping in close touch with the advancement that is being made along this line, and the course of training offered by the school was most thorough and comprehensive. It was highly endorsed by optometrists throughout the Northwest and was accredited by the Minnesota state board of optometry. Mr. de Mars has also become well known as a lecturer and has delivered addresses before many conventions upon the subject of optometry, which he has been largely instrumental in raising to the dignity of a science. Mr. de Mars married Miss Ethel Beach and they have become the parents of three children: Louis Lincoln, Jr., Theodore Edwin and Lucy Marie. Mr. de Mars is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, of which he has served as chief patriarch of the encampment branch, and is also connected with the Minneapolis, Minnesota State and National Associations of Optometrists, in which organizations he has held various offices. He has never been content with mediocrity, but with progress as his watchword he has ever endeavored to reach the highest degree of perfection possible in his work, and concentrated effort and superior ability have made him a leader in his chosen vocation.
