Drake. A native of New York state, Isaac T. Drake came west in early life and was one of the early settlers in Madelia. His father, Thomas Drake, was English by birth and upon immigrating to the United States located in New York. George M. Drake spent his boyhood in his birthplace, where he went to the public schools and graduated from the high school. At the University of Minnesota he continued his education, taking a course in the School of Mines, from which he graduated with the class of 1911, obtaining the degree of engineer of mines. For three years after leaving college Mr. Drake was employed as consulting engineer by various companies until, in 1914, he organized the firm of Johnson & Drake, which engaged in the contracting business. During the World war he was employed in the construction of emergency buildings for the United States government, an exceedingly trying task in those days of general industrial disorder. In February, 1920, the firm was reorganized as Johnson, Drake & Piper. This firm has been very successful and in the last few years has enjoyed a merited prosperity. In addition to the work connected with this firm Mr. Drake holds a responsible position in the Federal Building Realty Corporation, as its secretary and treasurer. This corporation owns and maintains the Minneapolis branch of the United States Parcel Post, an important piece of downtown property. At St. Paul, on the 14th of October, 1913, Mr. Drake was united in marriage to Miss Kathryn Bayard of that city. Mrs. Drake is the daughter of Frederick L. Bayard. Her brother, Robert P. Bayard, went overseas in the World war, in the Twentieth Engineers of the American Expeditionary Forces, and played a gallant part in the offensive action along the Meuse and in the Argonne. Mr. and Mrs. Drake have a little son named George Robert Drake. In his college days Mr. Drake became a member of the Sigma Rho fraternity. He is also a high Mason, belonging to Joppa Lodge, No. 300, A. F. & A. M.; Minneapolis Consistory; and Zuhrah Temple of the Mystic Shrine. Politically he holds to the views of the republican party, supporting its candidates at the polls. He is a member of the Civic & Commerce Association and the Kiwanis Club, affiliations that denote his interest in civic affairs. Mr. Drake's name is also to be found on the rolls of the Minneapolis Athletic, Midland Hills Golf and Auto clubs. An active man physically, Mr. Drake takes a keen interest in all the outdoor sports, of which there are many in his city, those of the winter season vieing with the more familiar summer pastimes in popularity. Golf is his favorite recreation and in the winter he keeps fit by indulging in frequent games of handball.
