EDWARDS (DeWitt Clinton Edwards) - Vol II, pg 807 Dewitt C. Edwards, of the firm of Devaney & Edwards, attorneys at law, was born in Casselton, North Dakota, September 5, 1890, and is a son of Thomas J. and Mary E. (Lockhart) Edwards. The father was born in Wyoming county, New York, while the mother was a native of Lucknow, Ontario. Thomas J. Edwards became a contractor and builder of Casselton, North Dakota, and has taken active part in public affairs of the home town, his aid and influence being a progressive element in the city's growth and improvement. At the usual age Dewitt C. Edwards entered the public schools of Casselton and passed through consecutive grades to his graduation from the high school with the class of 1908. He next attended the University of Minnesota and pursuing his law course there was graduated with the LL. B. degree in the class of 1913. He also pursued special collegiate work in economics and public speaking. He was admitted to the bar in 1913 and immediately began practice in Minneapolis. For two years he was general attorney for the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railroad and in 1920 he formed a partnership with John P. Devaney under the firm name of Devaney & Edwards. This association continues and the firm enjoys a good practice that has connected them with much important litigation tried in the courts here. He has been active as a public speaker in support of political candidates and for the Liberty Loan and other war measures, and he is a member of the auditorium committee and active in the project of the building of a new auditorium in Minneapolis. He is a member of both the Hennepin County and the Minnesota State Bar associations. On the 25th of December, 1914, Mr. Edwards was united in marriage to Miss Lillian S. Strehlow of Casselton, North Dakota, and they have become the parents of two children: Harriet and Jean. Mr. Edwards is well known in the club circles of the city, having membership in the Minneapolis Athletic, the Interlachen and the University clubs and also in the Kable Klub of Minneapolis. He is connected with the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and is a York Rite Mason, while he also belongs to Sigma Alpha Epsilon, a college fraternity. He has always believed strongly in those things which make for decency and order in citizenship, for progress and improvement in the public life of the community and for the advancement and uplift of the individual. He possessses the spirit of western enterprise and progress, which has been the dominant element in the steady and rapid growth of this section of the country and already he has gained a most creditable place as a representative of the Minneapolis bar.
