ESTERLY - Vol II, pg 537-538 Among the leading insurance firms of Minneapolis is the Esterly-Hoppin Company, of which Frank C. Esterly is the president, and his energy and business acumen have been determining factors in the success which has attended the activities of the organization. He was born in Whitewater, Wisconsin, September 21, 1873, and his parents were George W. and Kate (Haines) Esterly. His ancestors were among the early Dutch settlers of New York, and some of the furniture used in the home of Governor Peter Stuyvesant is still in the possession of the Esterly family. George Esterly, the grandfather of the subject of this review, was the manufacturer of what was said to be the first reaper. He took out the patent rights on an improved model, which was awarded the gold medal at Chicago in 1848 and was recognized as the best harvester on the market. He built up an enterprise of large proportions and in 1892 moved his business to Minneapolis, at which time his son, George W. Esterly, became president, but owing to the general business depression which soon followed, the firm was obliged to discontinue its operations. At a subsequent period George W. Esterly was appointed deputy auditor for the state department at Washington, D. C., a position which he filled with efficiency for several years. Following his graduation from the high school at Whitewater, Wisconsin, in 1892, Frank C. Esterly accompanied the family on the removal to Minneapolis, entering the State University in this city. In 1894 he left that institution to associate himself with the insurance firm of Fletcher, March & Company, with which he remained for three years, and then became a student in the Columbian Law School at Washington D. C., which conferred upon him the LL. B. degree in 1899. Two years later he was admitted to the bar in the District of Columbia and in 1898, while pursuing his legal studies, he also held a clerical position in the treasury department in Washington, continuing to act in that capacity until 1900, when he was sent by the war department to Porto Rico. In 1901 he returned to Washington and for a time was employed in the office of the secretary of war, afterward returning to Minneapolis for the purpose of continuing his law studies in the State University, from which he won the degree of LL. M. He was admitted to the Minnesota bar and in 1901 became a member of the insurance firm of Belden, Wallace & Company, which in 1905 was organized and incorporated as the Esterly-Hoppin Company. Mr. Esterly has since served as its president and the undertaking has enjoyed a continuous growth. The firm represents the most reliable companies in the field and now writes a large amount of insurance annually. Mr. Esterly combines a detailed knowledge of the business with marked executive ability and his legal training is of great assistance to him in the conduct of his interests. On the 20th of September, 1905, Mr. Esterly was united in marriage to Miss Stella Regina Peterson, a daughter of Theodore Peterson of Brookline, Massachusetts. In. civic and political affairs Mr. Esterly has taken an active and helpful interest and from 1902 until 1906 he was secretary of the Roosevelt Club. He is a member of the Chi Psi, Phi Delta Phi and Theta Nu Epsilon fraternities and the Minikahda, Athletic and Lincoln clubs. Industry has been the key which has unlocked for him the portals of success, thoroughness and diligence have characterized all of his work and in business circles of the city his standing is of the highest. His career has been marked by steady advancement, due to his close application, his study of the business to which he has turned his attention and his unquestioned integrity and reliability.
