(Folsom) Folsom. In both the paternal and maternal lines he traces his ancestry back to John Folsom, a soldier of the American Revolution, who served as a private in Colonel Enoch Poor's New Hampshire regiment. This patriot enlisted May 26, 1775, at the age of sixteen, and was a member of the company of one, Captain Philip Tilton, which is mentioned in the New Hampshire State Papers. Samuel H. Folsom, the father of John A. Folsom of this review, was born May 20, 1825, and came to Minnesota from Maine in 1858, residing in Minneapolis continuously for almost half a century. He was one of the first teachers in the public schools of this city and later established what was known as S. H. Folsom's Select School, which was located most of the time at the corner of Sixth street and Second avenue, South, where John Albert Folsom was born. This institution will be remembered by all the older residents of the city, for it was there that most of them received their commercial training. It was on the 8th of September, 1861, three years after his arrival in Minneapolis, that Samuel H. Folsom wedded Miss Hannah C. Folsom. Their son, John Albert, completed a course in the Minneapolis Central high school by graduation in 1884, after which he spent four years as a student in the University of Minnesota. He began his career in the journalistic world as a newsboy for the Minneapolis Tribune, Journal and Gopher Mirror. Later he was a carrier for the Journal and Tribune, then advertising collector for the Tribune at the time it was owned by General Nettleton and Major Houghton, and Lucian Swift was the cashier. His first position after leaving college was with this newspaper, on which he worked as a reporter and special writer from 1888 until 1891. Subsequently he became the owner and editor of the Northwestern Real Estate & Financial Register and other publications and eventually engaged in the general printing and publishing business. For the past seventeen years, however, Mr. Folsom has been engaged in the real estate business as his chief line of endeavor. As the head of the Folsom Investment Company he conducts a general business in real estate and mortgage loans, making a specialty of Lake Harriet property. The buying, platting and selling of real estate in Minneapolis and vicinity has developed rapidly, owing to the steady and prosperous growth of the city, and in no district has there been a greater demand for high-class homes than around Lake Harriet. In this city, on the 22d of October, 1890, Mr. Folsom was united in marriage to Miss Fannie L. Browne, daughter of the late Horatio P. Browne of Minneapolis. Mr. and Mrs. Folsom have four children: Mary L., now Mrs. Harry G. Stillwell; Arline C. the wife of Donald N. Ferguson; Kendric P.; and Merrill B., who married Elnor Lane, a daughter of Dr. Leslie Lane of this city. The elder of the two sons, Kendric, enlisted in the One Hundred and Fifty-first Field Artillery, April 17, 1917, and spent three months in training in the Minneapolis Armory, a week at Fort Snelling, two months at Fort Riley and a month and a half at Camp Mills, going overseas in October, 017. After five months' training at Camp Coetquidan in France he was sent to the at, where he remained on the firing line almost continuously until the armistice was signed. He took part in the action of St. Mihiel, along the Meuse, in Champaign, where he was wounded and gassed, and in the Argonne offensive. After the cessation of hostilities he was sent into Germany with the Army of Occupation, as a member of Battery D, One Hundred and Fifty-first Field Artillery, Forty-second "Rainbow" Division, being stationed near Coblenz. He was honorably discharged on the 10th of May, 1919. The religious faith of Mr. Folsom is indicated in his membership in the Plymouth Congregational church, while fraternally he is identified with the Masons, belonging to Lake Harriet Lodge, No. 277, A. F. & A. M., of which his son Kendric is also a member. For the past thirty-five years J. A. Folsom has been connected with the Royal Arcanum, now holding membership in Minnehaha Council. As a man vitally interested in the growth of the city through the past four decades, Mr. Folsom has long been an active member of the Minneapolis Real Estate Board, the National Association of Real Estate Boards and the Civic & Commerce Association.
