Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical HARRIS P. GAGNON - Vol II, pg 341-342 One of the leading business men of Minneapolis is Harris P. Gagnon, president and treasurer of the Elliott Fuel Company, a wholesale and retail coal concern. He was born in Marinette, Wisconsin, on the 24th of January, 1880, a son of Edward and Josephine (Bourgoyne) Gagnon, the former a native of Quebec, Canada, and the latter of Green Bay, Wisconsin. For many years Edward Gagnon was engaged in the contracting business, achieving substantial success in that connection, and he is now living retired in Green Bay. To the union of Mr. and Mrs. Gagnon twelve children were born, seven sons and five daughters, Harris P., whose name introduces this review, being the fourth in order of birth. Harris P. Gagnon received his early education in the public schools of Marinette, Wisconsin, and after graduation from high school made his initial step into the business world, determined to carve out a successful career without assistance. He came to Minneapolis, where he worked at various things until 1901, when he became associated with the Pittsburgh Coal Company as accountant, a position which he held for three years. Subsequently he was for seven years a salesman for the Northwestern Fuel Company, and upon the reorganization of the Elliott Fuel Company, he was made vice president. Some seven years later he became president and treasurer of the same company, which is one of the large wholesale and retail enterprises of the city and state. That he has made wise use of his time and opportunities is evidenced in the success which has come to him and he well merits the confidence and esteem in which he is held by his fellow citizens. Aside from his connection with the Elliott Fuel Company, Mr. Gagnon is proprietor of the H. P. Gagnon Company, an agency handling coal machinery, and he is president of the Twin City Coal Merchants. During the World war he was associated with the government, giving generously of his time and money in the promotion of all worthy causes. He assisted in the distribution of fuel and in the enforcement of rules laid down at that time. In Minneapolis on the 14th of September, 1904, was celebrated the marriage of Harris P. Gagnon to Miss Katherine Irwin, a daughter of John L. Irwin. The Irwins are among this city's old and honored families, having taken up their residence here before there were any railroads. Mr. and Mrs. Gagnon are parents of two children: John L, who is attending high school; and Richard I. Mrs. Gagnon is a woman of much personal charm and is socially prominent. In his political views Mr. Gagnon is a republican and although he has never sought nor desired public preferment he is ever cognizant of the duties and obligations of good citizenship and to that end is active in the furtherance of any movement for the development and improvement of the city, county and state. He is a consistent communicant of the Catholic church and fraternally he is identified with the Knights of Columbus. Socially he finds recreation in the Minneapolis Athletic Club, the Minneapolis Golf Club and the Twin City Coal Merchants' Association. He is an advocate of all outdoor sports and is particularly fond of fishing and golf. Mr. Gagnon has a beautiful home at Wyazata, on Lake Minnetonka.
