Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical EDWARD CHENERY GALE - Vol II, pg 611 Edward Chenery Gale, a native son of Minneapolis and a member of one of the honored pioneer families of the city, is prominently identified with the legal profession and has made steady advancement in a calling which demands a keen intellect and ability of a high order. The family is of English descent and was founded in this country by Richard Gale, who settled in Watertown. Massachusetts, in 1636. Edward C. Gale was born in this city, August 21, 1862, and his parents, Samuel C. and Susan (Damon) Gale, removed to Minneapolis from Massachusetts, establishing their home here in 1857 and casting in their lot with the early settlers of this community. The father completed a course in law but concentrated his attention upon the real estate business, in which he won a substantial measure of success, and in civic affairs took a most active and helpful part. The public schools of Minneapolis afforded Edward C. Gale his early educational opportunities and in 1878 he was graduated from the high school. For two years he attended the State University and then entered Yale, from which he was graduated with the class of 1884. The succeeding year was spent abroad and after returning to this country he began reading law in the office of Shaw & Gray, well known attorneys of Minneapolis, subsequently winning the degree of A. M. from the law school of Harvard University. He has since successfully followed his profession and is now associated in practice with Fred B. Snyder, under the style of Snyder & Gale, theirs being one of the leading law firms of the city. On the 28th of June, 1892, Mr. Gale was married to Miss Sarah Pillsbury, a daughter of ex-Governor John S. Pillsbury, and they have one child living, Richard Pillsbury. Mr. Gale has never allowed his professional duties so to monopolize his time as to exclude his participation in matters relating to the general welfare and he has ever fully recognized and met the duties and obligations of citizenship. He is a member of the public library board; a director of the Minneapolis Society of Fine Arts, of which he has been president; president of the Hennepin County Sanitarium Commission; vice president of the Minneapolis Chapter of the Red Cross; treasurer of the Minneapolis Academy of Sciences; and a member of the Hennepin County Planning Commission. He has also been president of the Minneapolis Bar Association.
