Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical EDWARD GORGEN, D.D.S. - Vol II, pg 245-246 Dr. Edward Gorgen, who has been actively engaged in the practice of dentistry in Minneapolis since 1900, is widely recognized as one of the able and successful representatives of the profession in this city. His birth occurred in Steele county, Minnesota, on the 7th of February, 1872, his parents being Giles and Helen (Rockwold) Gorgen, both of whom were natives of Norway and when still quite young, came to the new world, and settled in Steele county, this state. Giles Gorgen followed farming in early manhood but subsequently turned his attention to merchandising, conducting an enterprise of that character at New Richland, Minnesota. He passed away in 1906. His widow survived him for seven years, her death occurring in 1913. Edward Gorgen, the youngest in a family of three sons, obtained his early education in the public schools of New Richland and afterward continued his studies in the University of Minnesota, from which institution he was graduated with the degree of D. M. D. in 1899. He later pursued a law course in the Lincoln and Jefferson University, being graduated therefrom with the degree of LL. B., and subsequently took up the practice of dentistry at Fairmont, Minnesota. It was in the year 1900 that he came to Minneapolis, where he has followed his profession continuously to the present time and has built up an extensive and lucrative practice. He displays marked skill in the use of the many delicate little instruments which constitute the equipment of the modern dentist and his proficiency in every phase of the work is widely acknowledged. On the 7th of February, 1901, in Minneapolis, Dr. Gorgen was united in marriage to Miss Sophia Hammer, a daughter of Mrs. Sophia Hammer and a representative of an old and honored family of this part of the state. They have become parents of three children, namely: Earl Cyrus, Ray Edward and Elizabeth June. Politically Dr. Gorgen is an active republican and his religious faith is indicated by his membership in the Westminster Presbyterian church. Fraternally he is a Scottish Rite Mason and member of Zuhrah Temple of the Mystic Shrine and he also belongs to the Minneapolis Athletic Club, the Superior Golf Club and the Commonwealth Club, while along strictly professional lines he is connected with the district, state and national dental associations. During the period of the World war he served as a member of the executive board in connection with the draft. In golf, hunting and fishing he finds pleasure and recreation when opportunity permits, but the demands of his practice leave him comparatively little leisure. He has never regarded his professional education as ended with the completion of his college course but has ever remained a close and discriminating student of the science of dentistry, and his pronounced skill and ability are not only attested by his fellow practitioners but by the general public as well.
