Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical FRANK WILLIAM GREAVES - Vol II, pg 558-561 For thirty-six years Frank William Greaves has been a resident of Minneapolis and no man is better known or more highly respected in business circles of the Twin cities. His initiative spirit and administrative powers have found expression in the development of a large mercantile enterprise and in financial affairs he also figures conspicuously, his efforts being resultant factors in whatever he undertakes. He was born in the state of New York, March 26, 1864, and his parents were George Turner and Susan D. (Pease) Greaves, the former a native of England and the latter of New York. As a young man the father came to the United States, locating at Ramapo, New York, where he engaged in the making of steel cutlery, being an expert in that line of work. His demise occurred in that state. After completing his public school course Frank W. Greaves became a student at the normal school at Cortland, New York, after which he took up the study of telegraphy, and was operator for the Lackawanna Railroad at Lisle, that state. For a few years he followed that occupation and in October, 1883, when nineteen years of age, he arrived in St. Paul, Minnesota, securing employment with the Northern Pacific Railroad Company, with which he remained for one and a half years. In the latter part of 1884 he became Minneapolis representative for the firm of Cumner, Jones & Company of Boston, Massachusetts, wholesale dealers in tailors' trimmings, and two years later he entered this line of activity on his own account, opening a store at No. 244 Nicollet avenue. He afterward removed to No. 308 First Avenue, South, later to No. 38 South Third street and subsequently secured a lease on the property at Nos. 10-14 North Fifth street, where he is now located. He remodeled the building and now has one of the largest and most complete establishments of this character in the city He handles trimming supplies for merchant tailors, dressmakers, furriers and army posts, catering only to the wholesale trade, and he gives his close personal attention to every detail of the business displaying marked enterprise and executive ability in its management. This constitutes but one phase of his activities, however, for he is also vice president of the Gateway State Bank, vice president and a director of the Midland Life Insurance Company of St. Paul, a director of the Midland Trust & Savings Bank of St. Paul and is serving as secretary of the La Salle Motor Car Company. He possesses the poise, self-reliance and business sagacity necessary to carry on large enterprises successfully and in the many fields in which he is operating the strength of his mental endowments and the force of his character have placed him in the vanguard. Mr. Greaves has been married twice. In 1883 he wedded Miss Lelia Teel of Minneapolis, who passed away, leaving three daughters: Florence, Lelia and Margaret. Some time later he married Miss Irene M. Teel, a sister of his first wife, and they have a daughter, Susan. Mr. Greaves is a popular clubman, having membership with the Town & Country, Interlachen, Rotary and Minneapolis Athletic clubs, and in Masonry he has taken the thirty-second degree in the consistory, being also a member of Zuhrah Temple, No. 19, of the Mystic Shrine, while he is likewise connected with the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. Along the path of opportunity open to all Mr. Greaves has reached the goal of notable success, his progress being due to the fact that he has recognized and utilized advantages which others have passed heedlessly by. He has followed constructive methods, bending his efforts to administrative direction and executive control, and his contribution to the business development of the Twin Cities has been an important one.
