Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical WILLIAM PENROSE HALLOWELL - Vol II, pg 229-230 One of the prominent business men of Minneapolis who is actively identified with commercial interests as coal dealer and manufacturer, is William Penrose Hallowell. A native of Pennsylvania, he was born in Philadelphia, on the 30th of November, 1863, a son of William P. and Elizabeth (Davis) Hallowell. The progenitors of the Hallo-well family in America were John and Mary (Sharp) Hallowell, who came from Nottinghamshire, England, to Darby, Pennsylvania, in 1682. The family is one of the oldest and most prominent families of that city and the grandfather, Morris L. Hallowell, was one of the influential and leading men of his day. The Hallowells were stanch supporters of the Quaker religion. William P. Hallowell, Sr., and his brothers were soldiers in the Union army during the Civil war, he being first lieutenant and adjutant of the Fifty-fifth Massachusetts Regiment, Edward N. was a general. Norwood P. was a colonel. In the acquirement of his education William Penrose Hallowell attended the common schools of his native state and in due time enrolled in Cheltenham Academy, the Friends Central School and Swarthmore College. In 1883 he came to Minneapolis, joining his brothers. Morris L. and I. R. D. Hallowell, who had located here a few years previously. His initial step into the business world here was made as a clerk in the Northwestern National Bank and subsequently he accepted a like position with D. Morrison & Company, merchant millers. In 1888 he accepted a clerkship with the Northwestern Fuel Company and since that time he has continued to devote his attention to this business. Later he became a partner of the firm of H. W. Armstrong & Company, then resident manager for the Youghiogheny & Lehigh Coal Company. In 1902 he was secretary of the Holmes & McCaughy Company and in 1904 became vice president and treasurer of the Holmes & Hallowell Company, then located at 401 First avenue, South, which operates wholesale and retail offices in this city and in St. Paul. He is also prominently connected with the Ramaley Boat Company, having held the office of chief executive since its inception. This company manufactures cruisers, auto boats, hydroplanes, racing sailboats, high grade rowboats and canoes. Mr. Hallowell has proven himself a capable business man and no man is more highly esteemed in this city for his integrity and sterling worth. On the 5th of June, 1888, was celebrated the marriage of Mr. Hallowell to Miss Agnes Hardenbergh, a daughter of Charles M. and Mary (Lee) Hardenbergh. The ceremony was performed in St. Marks church. To this union one child was born: William Penrose Hallowell, (III), whose demise occurred on the 13th of March, 1913, in his twenty-first year. Politically Mr. Hallowell has always given his allegiance to the republican party, having firm belief in the principles of that party as factors in good government. He is identified with the Minneapolis, Lafayette, and Lincoln Automobile Clubs. For five years, from 1883 to 1888, Mr. Hallowell was a member of the State Militia, serving in Company, I, First Regiment.
