HARPER - Vol II, pg 298 One of the estimable business men of Minneapolis is Harry D. Harper, senior member of Harry Harper & Company, Accountants and Auditors, with offices in the McKnight building. A native of Minnesota, his birth occurred in St. Paul on the 21st of September, 1892, a son of D. W. and Addie (Door) Harper. His father was born in Canada and came to the United States when a small boy. He located in Des Moines, Iowa, and resided there until he was thirty years of age, at which time he came to Minnesota and located in St. Paul. He engaged in the mercantile business there and also in Aitkin, Minnesota, until 1919, when he retired from active business life. He is now making his home in Mobile, Alabama. The mother's demise occurred in 1901. In the acquirement of his early education Harry D. Harper attended the common schools of St. Paul and the high schools of Aitkin, Minnesota, and Juneau, Alaska. He was graduated from the latter school in 1911 and subsequently enrolled in the University of Minnesota in 1911, which institution conferred the A. B. degree upon him in 1915. In 1915 and 1916 he took postgraduate work at the University of Minnesota, and was an instructor of accounting for the general extension division of the University of Minnesota. In 1917 the University of Minnesota conferred upon him the M. A. degree. During 1916 and 1917 Harry D. Harper was assistant professor of economics and accounting at the University of Kansas and also branch manager of Crockett, Couchman & Company, Certified Public Accountants, of Lawrence, Kansas. Upon the entrance of the United States into the World war he was one of the first to put all personal interests aside and enlist in the army. He entered service on the 15th of May, 1917, and was sent to the First Officers Training Camp at Fort Snelling, where he was commissioned a second lieutenant and was sent to France with the first group of American officers for training. He was assigned to the First Division, Seventh Field Artillery, and he participated in the battles of Cantigny, Soissons, St. Mihiel, Argonne and many others. In 1919 he returned to America and received his honorable discharge at Plattsburg, New York, in April of that year. After his release from the army he accepted a position as instructor in general accountancy in the extension division of the University of Minnesota and while active in that capacity organized the firm of Harper & Wise, which partnership was maintained until 1922.
