Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical ISAAC HAZLETT - Vol II, pg 161-162 That every community, every city and every country has its leaders-men who are active in the control of public affairs and of large and important private enterprises indicates the fact that opportunity is universal, not local, ana in the words of a modern philosopher: "Success does not depend upon a map but upon a time-table." The individual who passes on the journey of life those who perhaps started out ahead of him or under more advantageous circumstances is the one who quickly and readily recognizes and utilizes the chances which surround all mankind. The life story of Isaac Hazlett carries with it the thrill of success, for through individual effort he has wrested fortune from the hands of fate and is today one of the most prominent of the financiers of the Northwest. Born in Zanesville, Ohio, he is a son of John C. and Margaret (Catspaw) Hazlett, the former a native of Ohio, while the latter was of Holland Dutch descent. Isaac Hazlett was reared in Iowa, no event of special importance occurring to vary the routine of life for him in his youthful days. He improved his educational opportunities, but they were not superior to those which other boys enjoy. When he faced the business world it was with the determination to make the best possible use of his time and his talents and he started out as a merchant in a general store with a cash capital of but six hundred dollars. Today he is interested in twenty-seven banks, being president or vice president of twenty-two of these. After his initial step was made he continued in mercantile circles in Iowa for nine years, conducting his general store, and then removed to Verndale, Minnesota, where he entered the field of banking. For four years he was identified with a country bank at that place and then sought the opportunity offered in the broader field of Minneapolis. Here he has since resided and through all the intervening years has continually increased the scope of his activity through the establishment of banks in various towns and cities of the Northwest until he has been active in the organization of twenty-seven banking institutions. He has remained an executive officer of the great majority of these, acting as president or vice president of twenty-two, and his opinions as to management, control and Investment are always regarded as a most valuable asset in the successful conduct of the institutions. Mr. Hazlett has also dealt extensively in farm mortgages and in all business affairs displays notably sound judgment and keen sagacity, his opinion as to the value of any business situation being seldom, if ever, at fault. Isaac Hazlett was married in 1875 to Miss Esther G. Nichols and they have a son, James C. Hazlett, who was born in Verndale, Minnesota, and was educated in the local and Minneapolis high schools. He early started out in the business world in connection with the woolen industry, in which he was active for five years. He spent a similar period in the East Side State Bank at Minneapolis and then turned his attention to insurance, in which he is still engaged. During the World war he had charge of the distribution department of the Ninth Federal Reserve District and gave his attention to the duties of that position for nearly, three years. He wedded Mary E. Gavin and they have two children, James C., Jr., and Esther May. As an insurance man James C. Hazlett handles all kinds of insurance save life and has rapidly developed one of the substantial agencies of the state. In his fraternal relations Isaac Hazlett is a Mason, holding membership in Ark Lodge, A. F. & A. M.; Ark Chapter, R. A. M.; Minneapolis Mounted Commandery, No. 23, K. T.; while in the Scottish Rite bodies he has attained the thirty-second degree, and he is a member of Zuhrah Temple, Mystic Shrine. He belongs to the Minneapolis Club, but the importance and extent of his business interests have left him comparatively little leisure for the enjoyment of social activity. His life work has been of the greatest value in the development of the state and his potency in the field of business has brought him to the point of leadership in financial circles in the Northwest.
