Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical GEORGE HOKE - Vol. II, pg 234 A representative member of the legal profession in Minneapolis is George Hoke, who was born at Dalmatia, near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on the 28th of October, 1879, a son of George and Emma (Hensyl) Hoke. On the paternal side he is of English descent. The maternal grandfather, Jesse Hensyl, was born in Switzerland and came to this country in early life. In the acquirement of his early education George Hoke attended the public schools of his birthplace and in due time enrolled in Dartmouth College, from which institution he was graduated with the class of 1903. He then took up the study of law at the University of Minnesota and later attended Harvard Law School. In 1907 he began practice in St. Paul with the firm of How, Butler & Mitchell, which later became Butler, Mitchell & Hoke. On January 1, 1918, he severed his connections with that firm and came to Minneapolis, organizing the firm of Hoke, Krause & Faegre. They represent the Great Northern Railway, various insurance companies and other important interests. Mr. Hoke is one of the ablest trial lawyers in the state and well merits the position he has attained among the representative members of the profession in Minneapolis. On the 12th of April, 1912, occurred the marriage of Mr. Hoke to Miss Carolyn Peabody, a daughter of Alex M. and Carrie G. Peabody and to their union three children have been born: George, Marshall and Carol. Mrs. Hoke is prominent in the club and social affairs of this city and is a woman of much culture and refinement. Since attaining his majority Mr. Hoke has given his political endorsement to the republican party and the principles for which it stands. His religious faith is that of the Episcopal church, to the support of which he is a generous contributor, and socially he is identified with the Minnesota Club of St. Paul. Since taking up his residence here Mr. Hoke has wielded a great influence for good in this community and has proven himself a most public-spirited and progressive citizen, well calculated to inspire all with his splendid character and manly qualities.
