Holbrook) - Vol II, pg 557 One of the successful business men of Minneapolis is L. W. Holbrook, treasurer cf Shevlin, Carpenter & Clarke Company. A native of Iowa, his birth occurred in Charles City, on the 14th of September, 1883, a son of Calvin and Anna (Zion) Holbrook. In the acquirement of his academic education L. W. Holbrook attended the common schools of Charles City, and in 1899 came to Minneapolis, becoming a student in the Central high school. He then took a course in a business college, upon the completion of which he entered the offices of the Soo Line Railroad in a clerical capacity. He remained with that road two years, at the termination of which time, in 1902, he became associated with the Shevlin, Carpenter & Clarke Company. His first position was as timekeeper and subsequently he served as bill clerk, bookkeeper, cashier, assistant treasurer and finally won promotion to his present office as treasurer of the concern. Aside from his connection with this company, Mr. Holbrook is assistant treasurer of several allied companies. On the 14th of February, 1906, was celebrated the marriage of Mr. Holbrook to Miss Helen Grahn, a daughter of the late Charles A. Grahn of Minneapolis. To their union two children have been born: Helen and Charles. Mrs. Holbrook is socially prominent and takes an active interest in civic affairs. Mr. Holbrook is a strict adherent of the republican party and the principles for which it stands. He is essentially a public-spirited citizen and his aid can always be counted upon in the furtherance of any movement for the upbuilding of the city, county and state. He holds membership in the Minneapolis Athletic Club, Lincoln Club and Automobile Club. He finds his greatest recreation in the out-of-doors and is particularly fond of golfing and autoing.
