Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical F. J. HOPKINS (Frederick J. Hopkins) - Vol II, pg 393-394 F. J. Hopkins came to Minneapolis over forty years ago and through the steps of an orderly progression has worked his way upward 'in business circles until he is now treasurer and a director in one of the large mercantile enterprises of the city. He was born in Benton Harbor, Michigan, and in the public schools of that state he acquired his education. Believing that the Northwest offered excellent opportunities for advancement, he came to Minneapolis and entered the employ of the firm of Janney, Semple, Hill & Company, conducting one of the leading wholesale hardware establishments of the city, first working as assistant bookkeeper. His ability and trustworthiness won for him merited promotion and he was advanced to the position of head bookkeeper, afterward becoming credit man, while he is now serving as treasurer and is on the board of directors, although he still acts in the capacity of credit man. His record is an unusual one, for throughout his business career he has been identified with this house, and his long retention in its service is indisputable proof of his fidelity and efficiency. Mr. Hopkins has been married twice. He first wedded Miss Helen M. Jones of Utica, New York, and they became the parents of two daughters: Mrs. W. F. Potter, now a resident of New York city; and Mrs. M. S. Denman of Des Moines, Iowa. Following the demise of his first wife, Mr. Hopkins married Miss Fanny Trezevant of Marietta, Georgia, whose ancestors were French Huguenots, and the family, which is an old and prominent one in the south, was established in America three hundred years ago. Mrs. Hopkins is a member of St. Paul's Episcopal church and her husband is affiliated with the Westminster Presbyterian church. He is a member of the Minneapolis, Minikahda and Automobile clubs and his political allegiance is given to the republican party. He is a devotee of the rod and gun and has done considerable deep sea fishing, finding recreation and enjoyment in outdoor sports. He gives his best efforts to anything that he undertakes and thoroughness and devotion to duty are his outstanding characteristics. Honorable purpose has guided him in all of his business relations and what he has accomplished represents the fit utilization of his innate powers and talents. He is recognized as a capable and enterprising business man and a public-spirited and progressive citizen, and his personal qualities are such that he has gained the warm friendship of many.
