Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical GEORGE COLEMAN HOWE - Vol II, pg 812-815 The life record of George Coleman Howe covered the Psalmist's allotted span of threescore years and ten, for he had reached the age of seventy-one when called from this life. Four years before he had largely retired from business but for many years was a most active and forceful factor in connection with oil and mining operations and other important business activities. Mr. Howe was of Canadian birth, born at Athens, Ontario, in February, 1852, his parents being William and Lucy (Coleman) Howe, who were Americans by birth but had removed to Canada with their respective parents at an early day. George C. Howe acquired his education in the schools of Ontario to the age of eighteen years, when he left home and made his way into the oil fields of Pennsylvania and was thereafter connected with the development of the oil industry in that section of the country until 1890, at which time he came to Minnesota, settling in Duluth. There he began operating in real estate and in mining and in 1901 became one of the promoters of the Saskatchewan Valley & Manitoba Land Company, this in time controlling the largest land business in the Northwest. Mr. Howe also established a farm at Casselton, North Dakota, which was one of the first of the famous large farms in that district. About four years ago the Saskatchewan Valley & Manitoba Land Company was reorganized under the name of the Howe Investment Company, of which Mr. Howe was president and Mrs. Howe now continues as president of this company. Mr. Howe was also heavily interested in lumber in Florida and on the Pacific coast and he had large holdings in mining properties on the Iron Range until 1902, when he removed to Minneapolis. From that time forward he largely lived retired, save for the supervision which he gave to his invested interests. He had with the passing years come into control of extensive and valuable property and business holdings and wealth had come to him as the result of his sound judgment, wise management and progressive spirit. In 1878 Mr. Howe was united in marriage to Miss Mary Elizabeth Latimer, a daughter of William and Eliza (McCullough) Latimer, who were natives of England. Mr. and Mrs. Howe had one child, Blanche, now the wife of General A. D. McRae, a resident of Vancouver and for four years a soldier of the World war. They have three children: Blanche, Lucille Coleman and Mary Marguerite. For thirteen years the family residence was maintained in Minneapolis and here Mr. Howe passed away on the 17th of July, 1922. He was a lifelong republican and although not a church member he attended the services of Dr. Shutter's church. He was identified with all of the prominent clubs, including the Minneapolis, Lafayette and Minikahda Clubs and in Masonry he attained the thirty-second degree of the Scottish Rite. His interests and activities were broad and varied and his entire career was actuated by high purposes and crowned with successful achievement.
