He is a son of W. and Agnes S. Jaffray and his youthful days were largely spent in the acquirement of a public school education in his native city. He has practically devoted his entire life to the banking business, receiving his initial training in this connection as an employe in the Merchants' Bank of Canada at Berlin. He spent five years in that institution, receiving thorough and comprehensive training and applying himself assiduously to the mastery of every phase of the banking business that came under his direction in the various positions which he filled. In 1887 he came to Minneapolis and accepted a clerical position in the Northwestern National Bank. Again his fidelity, earnestness of purpose and capability won him promotion and after two years he was made bookkeeper, while in 1890 he was assigned to the position of assistant cashier, there remaining until 1895, when he was offered the cashiership of the First National Bank of Minneapolis, which was already one of the leading financial institutions of the city. He has contributed to its further growth and development and has been active in directing its course and shaping its policy in official positions for more than twenty-seven years. He retired from the cashiership on being elected to the vice presidency and in 1917 he was elected to the presidency of this bank, of which he is now the chief executive official. His thorough and comprehensive training has been an essential feature in the continued development of the bank under his direction and his judgment is regarded as most sound and his sagacity keen, while his broad vision has compassed many of the aspects of banking problems in their widest and most complex phases. Mr. Jaffray is also identified with the First National Bank of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, as one of its directors, and is a well known figure in insurance circles, being interested in the Northwestern Life Insurance Company and the Northwestern Fire and Marine Insurance Company, while of the Minneapolis Trust Company he is the vice president. Mr. Jaffray's social qualities make for personal popularity and he is a highly esteemed member of the Minneapolis and Minikahda clubs. Aside from hunting he finds his chief recreation on the links, being a devotee of the game of golf. He allows nothing, however, to interfere with the faithful performance of his duties as a bank official and has ever held to the highest ideals concerning the safeguarding of the interests entrusted to his care.
