KOCH, OPT. D. One of the most successful optometrists in Minneapolis is Dr. Carel C. Koch, with offices in the Powers building. He was born in Norwood, Minnesota on the 23d of November, 1895, a son of Dr. John and Lilly L. (Ette) Koch. John Koch was born in Zevenaar, Holland, and came to this country at the age of eighteen years. Locating in Minneapolis, he enrolled in the University of Minnesota for the completion of his medical education, and was graduated in 1885, with the M. D. degree. He immediately located in Norwood for the practice of his chosen profession and remained there twelve years, during which time he enjoyed an extensive and important patronage and won a reputation as a distinguished physician and surgeon. Later he came to Minneapolis and practiced here until his demise, at the age of forty years. Mrs. Koch was a member of a prominent family of St. Louis, Missouri. Her father, Christian Ette, was a successful contractor and served throughout the Civil war. He died in his eighty-ninth year, highly respected and esteemed. In the acquirement of his early education Carel C. Koch attended the public schools of St. Louis, Missouri, and subsequently enrolled in the De Mars Institute of Optometry, from which he was graduated in 1917, after a three years' course. He then came to Minneapolis and passed the state board examination in optometry, with honors. Subsequently he established offices in the Powers building, which he has since maintained. He has built up an extensive and important practice and has attained a position of prominence among the foremost optometrists in the country. Aside from his private practice he is in charge of the Powers House Clinical Service, for the benefit of employes of that company. In Minneapolis, on the 17th of July, 1918, was celebrated the marriage of Dr. Koch and Miss Alice Gertrude Torrey, a daughter of John Torrey, a prominent resident of this city. To their union two children have been born: Mary Lilly, three years of age; and Carel C., Jr., one year old. Mrs. Koch is a woman of culture and refinement and she is prominent in club and social circles. Although Dr. Koch is a stanch supporter of the republican party he has never sought nor desired political preferment. He is, however, essentially public-spirited and has contributed in a marked degree to the development of this section of the state. His religious faith is that of the Universalist church and fraternally he is identified with the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, holding membership in Lodge No. 44. Socially he is connected with the Minneapolis Athletic Club and the Minneapolis Exchange Club. Along the line of his profession Dr. Koch has wide and varied connections, being a member of the Minneapolis Association of Optometrists, of which organization he is now president; of the Minnesota State Association of Optometrists; the American Optometrical Association; and he is a fellow, by examination, of the American Academy of Optometry, of which organization he is secretary and treasurer. During the World war the Doctor gave generously of his time and money in the furtherance of the government's interests and served in the Medical Corps of the United States army.
