N. Leighton Company. His high standing is evidenced in the fact that he has been chosen to the presidency of the northwest branch of the Associated General Contractors of America. Such has been his success that he now ranks among the capitalists here and as he has prospered in his undertakings he has embraced the opportunity to aid in the city's growth and development by the support he has given to all those civic interests and enterprises which feature in the welfare of the community. Early in his career he came to a realization of the fact that industry wins and industry has been the beacon light of his life. Its potency is shown in his prosperity and his example should well serve as a source of encouragement and inspiration to others. Horace Newell Leighton comes to the Mississippi valley from New England, his birth having occurred in Machias. Washington county, Maine, on the 8th of January, 1853. He spent his youthful days there and acquired his education in the public schools, and when his textbooks were put aside he worked in the shop, the mill and the office, where his varied experiences prepared him for the activities and duties of his later life. In the university of hard knocks he learned many valuable lessons concerning the estimate and value of his own powers and of those things which make up life's contacts, experiences and opportunities. He was twenty-three years of age when in 1876 he came to Minneapolis, where through the intervening period he has made his home. His progress in the business world has been continuous. He took up contracting and building and throughout the intervening period has directed his efforts along those lines. Steadily he has forged to the front and has long since occupied a commanding position in his chosen field of labor. It was in association with his three brothers-Eben E., Fred A. and J. LeRoy Leighton-that he organized the firm of H. N. Leighton & Company, under which style their operations were carried on until 1892, when the business was Incorporated under the present name of the H. N.
