LOUDON (Robert D. Loudon) Minneapolis is proud to number among her most substantial citizens and representative business men R. D. Loudon, president and treasurer of the Loudon Coal Mines Company, Incorporated. He was born on a farm in Winona county, Minnesota, on the 24th of August, 1869, a son of Samuel and Jane (Dempster) Loudon. The father was born in Glasgow, Scotland, while his wife was a native of Perth, Scotland. They came to America in later life and located on a farm in Winona county, Minnesota, in 1854. Mr. Loudon followed agricultural pursuits for the remainder of his life, achieving well-merited success. R. D. Loudon was reared on the home farm and attended the country schools in the community. In early life he learned telegraphy and he was railroad telegrapher, station agent, etc., for some ten years. He then entered the banking business at Utica, Minnesota, and was active in that connection for fifteen years. In the meantime he purchased a coal mine in Illinois and subsequently turned his entire time and attention to its operation. In 1917 he organized and incorporated the Loudon Coal Mines Company, of which he is president and treasurer. He carries on his coal business on the principle of selling direct from the mines to the consumer. Having worked his own way up from a salaried position to a big producer, he retains a warm interest in the salaried man or wage earner, and conducts his coal business in the interest of the man with a fixed income. Also he gives his customers the best quality of coal and two thousand pounds to the ton. His mines are located in Illinois and other states. Mr. Loudon's experiences in life have been broad and interesting and his ambition has kept him in touch with modern progressive methods. What he undertakes he accomplishes, for he is determined and energetic, realizing ever that when one avenue of opportunity seems closed other paths may be found which will lead to the desired goal. In 1896 was celebrated the marriage of Mr. Loudon and Miss Clara Behrs. In his political views he is a republican and although he has taken an active interest in civic affairs he has never sought nor desired political preferment. Fraternally he is a Scottish Rite Mason and holds membership in Winona Lodge, No. 4, F. & A. M., the Consistory and Osman Temple of the Mystic Shrine. He is a member of the Unity Society, which is an organization devoted to Bible study.
