Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical ======================================================== Vol II, pg 397-398 HORACE LOWRY Horace Lowry, president of the Twin City Rapid Transit Company and its subsidiaries, in undertaking the management of this corporation entered upon a business already established, but in enlarging and controlling it he has shown splendid executive power and initiative. A native son of Minneapolis, he was born February 4, 1880, his parents being Thomas and Beatrice M. (Goodrich) Lowry. The father was the founder and promoter of the Twin City Rapid Transit Company and is mentioned at length on another page of this work. In the acquirement of his education Horace Lowry attended the Emerson school and passed through consecutive grades to his graduation from the Central high school with the class of 1896. He then entered the University of Minnesota for his advanced training and there won the Bachelor of Science degree as one of the alumni of 1900. His business training, like his educational course, has been thorough and comprehensive. For two years after leaving the university he worked as an electrician in the shops of the Minneapolis Street Railway Company and then was appointed to a position in the auditing department, where he remained for nearly a year, working his way upward to the position of chief clerk in that department. He then left the company to give his attention to the management of his father's real estate and personal business interests, which up to that time had been in the hands of several agents, but in 1908 he resumed active connection with the Minneapolis Street Railway Company, accepting the superintendency of the Minneapolis division, which position he continued to fill until December 10, 1910. He then resigned and concentrated his efforts and attention upon the business of the Arcade Investment Company, of which he was the president, and it was during that period that he erected the twelve-story Lowry building in St. Paul, acting as his own general contractor of construction. On the 1st of January, 1912, he was appointed general manager of the Twin City Rapid Transit Company and on the 1st of January, 1913, was elected to the vice presidency. He continued to act as the second executive officer until 1916, when he succeeded C. G. Goodrich in the presidency, and has since been the chief executive head of this corporation. His college training, his previous business experience along various lines and his former active identification with the corporation, well qualified him for the onerous and responsible duties which he assumed as president and which he has most faithfully and efficiently discharged, maintaining the highest standards of service and conducting the interests of the corporation at all times along constructive lines, looking to the further development of the system and toward the attainment of a still greater efficiency in the matter of making this a real public utility. Mr. Lowry is president of the Arcade Investment Company, and is a director of the Minneapolis, St. Paul & Sault Ste. Marie Railway, the Duluth-Superior Traction Company, the Northwestern National Bank, the Minnesota Loan & Trust Company, and the Capital National Bank of St. Paul. He is also a member of the board of trustees of the Minneapolis Institute of Fine Arts and of the Lakewood Cemetery Association. On the 18th of March, 1909, Mr. Lowry was married to Miss Kate S. Burwell and they have become parents of two sons: Thomas and Goodrich. Mr. Lowry is identified with the Minneapolis Civic & Commerce Association and is deeply interested in everything that has to do with the welfare and progress of the city and with the advancement of municipal standards and ideals. He belongs to the Psi Upsilon, a college fraternity, and he has membership in the University Club of Chicago and the Minnesota Club of St. Paul, while in his home city he is prominently known in club circles through his identification with the Minneapolis, Minikahda and Athletic clubs. A lifelong resident of this city, his record is as an open book which all may read. He has proven his strength and capacity in the business world, his fidelity and progres-siveness in connection with public interests and at all times he has commanded and enjoyed the respect of his friends who are legion.
