He is a son of Jonas and Hilda (Edholm) Magney, both of whom were natives of Sweden. The father is a minister of the Lutheran faith, having devoted his life to that holy calling. Gottlieb R. Magney pursued his early education in the public schools at Stillwater, Minnesota, afterward spent three years as a student in the high school at Amery, Wisconsin, and then entered the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis, in which he devoted three years to the study of architecture and engineering, completing his course in 1905. He has since devoted his attention to the profession and his thoroughness and close application have been strong elements in his growing success. His first position was that of architectural draftsman in Seattle, to which he was appointed by the board of education of that city. There he remained for a year, after which he went to San Francisco and for a year was identified with the firm of Welch & Carey, architects. Retracing his steps to the middle west, he located at Duluth, where he opened an office for the practice of his profession in connection with P. M. Olson. The firm existed for a year and then in 1908 Mr. Magney returned to Minneapolis, where for a year he was employed by Edwin H. Hewitt. Later he was with the firm of Tyrie & Chapman, architects, for a year and then entered into partnership with C. B. Chapman, with offices in the Essex building, this relation being maintained until 1917. On its dissolution Mr. Magney entered into partnership with W. H. Tusler and the business is now being carried on under the style of Magney & Tusler, Incorporated, architects and engineers. Their interests are capitalized for fifty thousand dollars and they have built up a business of extensive and gratifying proportions, ranking high among the leading architects and builders of Minneapolis. Mr. Magney is now erecting a handsome residence. His religious faith is that of the Lutheran church and in political belief he is a republican, but the honors and emoluments of office have no attraction "for him. Fraternally he is identified with both the Masons and the Elks in Minneapolis and he belongs to the Civic & Commerce Association. His interest centers in those projects which are looking to the benefit and upbuilding of the city and his cooperation can be counted upon to further any progressive public interest. He enjoys golf and various forms of outdoor sports and life and thus finds his rest from the arduous cares of a growing business.
