MANUEL Malvern H. Manuel, treasurer of the Marquette Trust Co., was born in Waupaca, Wisconsin, January 26, 1865, and is a son of George W. and Rebecca (McClellan) Manuel, who were natives of Canada. The family, however, is of Scotch lineage. The parents came to Wisconsin at an early day, settling in Waupaca, where the father devoted his attention to the occupation of farming. Malvern H. Manuel spent his youthful days in the usual manner of the farm bred boy who divides his time between the work of the fields and the duties of the school room. Later he spent two years as a high school pupil in Montevideo, Minnesota, and afterward was graduated from the State Normal School at Winona, Minnesota, in 1887. He next matriculated in the University of Minnesota and was graduated with the Bachelor of Arts degree in 1894. For a time he engaged in teaching school, following the profession at St. James, Minnesota, and at Huron, South Dakota, until 1905, occupying the superintendency of the schools in both towns. In that year he came to Minneapolis and here turned his attention to manufacturing interests as president of the Manuel-Smith Heating Company, a position which he retained until 1898, when he disposed of his interest in that business and became associated with his brother in the organization of the Manuel Brothers Realty Company. He later became identified with the Marquette Securities Company and was thus actively engaged in the real estate business until 1921. On the 14th of December of that year, he was elected president of the Exchange State Bank, now consolidated with the Marquette Trust Company of which he is the treasurer, and he is financially and actively interested in several other corporations. His advancement in the business world has been continuous. There have been no spectacular phases in his career and the elements of chance have had nothing to do with his steady progression. He has worked his way ward by persistency of purpose, winning his success through unfaltering diligence 1 judicious investment and today he is regarded as one of the stable and thoroughly reliable bankers of the city.
