He is a son of George W. and Rebecca (McClellan) Manuel, who were natives of Canada and of Scotch descent. The family was founded in Canada at an early day and from that country George W. Manuel removed to the vicinity of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where he devoted his attention to the occupation of farming. In 1881 the family moved to Lac qui Parle county, Minnesota. After mastering the branches of learning taught in the district schools near his father's farm, Ralph W. Manuel attended the Normal School at St. Cloud, Minnesota, and was graduated with the class of 1892. He also pursued a law course for a time and in early manhood took up the profession of teaching, becoming principal and superintendent of the schools of Wells, Minnesota, where he continued his labors for six years, from 1894 until 1900. In the summer of the latter year he came to Minneapolis, where he has since made his home, and here he turned his attention to the book, stationery and publishing business as manager for the School Educational Company, with which he continued for five years, or until 1905. At that date he and his brother, Malvern H. Manuel, established the business conducted under the name of the Manuel-Smith Heating Company, now known as the Smith System Heating Company. Ralph Manuel remained as treasurer of the business for four years, at the end of which time he and his brother withdrew and embarked in the real estate and mortgage loan business under the corporate name of Manuel Brothers Company. In this work they continued until December, 1916, when Ralph W. Manuel became president of the Exchange State Bank, which was organized at that date, and there he bent his efforts to administrative direction and executive control until May, 1921, when he became, president of the State Institution for Savings, which was subsequently converted into the Marquette Trust Company. In December, 1921, Mr. Manuel retired as president of the Exchange State Bank and became chairman of the board. In April, 1922, the Exchange State Bank was merged into the Marquette Trust Company, and in June of the same year Mr. Manuel became president of the Pay Day National Bank. The latter institution is now affiliated with the Marquette Trust Company, under the name of Marquette National Bank. Mr. Manuel is still treasurer of the Manuel Brothers Company and treasurer of the Marquette Security Company, both large concerns, having a combined capital of a quarter of a million dollars. He is likewise connected with other important business interests of the city and his cooperation is regarded as a valuable asset in the successful management and control of large business affairs. Step by step he has advanced and each progressive step has brought him a broader outlook and wider opportunities. These he has eagerly utilized and through the development of his powers and the expansion of his interests he has come to a notable and enviable position among the leading business men of the city. On the 25th of May, 1904, Mr. Manuel was married to Miss Lily Inez Bartholomew of Annandale, Minnesota, and they have become parents of three children: George B., who was born August 18, 1907; Malcolm O., born November 10, 1909; and Helen R., born July 3, 1913. Mr. Manuel belongs to the Masonic fraternity, having membership in Cataract Lodge, A. P. & A. M., and he has also taken the council degrees. He has been particularly interested in civic affairs and has rendered valuable service in this connection. He is an officer in the Minneapolis Joint Improvement Association and an active member in the Parent-Teachers Association and Council. He is now serving as a member of the executive board of the citizens' charter committee and all questions of public importance are matters of vital concern to him, as he recognizes fully the duties and obligations of citizenship. His labors have aroused others to activity in the same field and it is well known that he attacks every question with an enthusiasm that is contagious.
