MASSIE For thirty years Charles C. Massie has been connected with Northup, King & Company of Minneapolis, wholesale dealers in seeds, of which firm he is now serving as president, and he is deserving of great credit for the success which he has gained, for it has been won through earnest effort and honorable methods. He is a native of Scotland, his birth having occurred in Aberdeenshire, on the 6th of November, 1872, and his parents, John and Isabella (Monroe) Massie, were also natives of that country. Both parents have passed away. The father was a farmer and grain merchant of Aberdeen. To their union were born twelve children, of whom ten are living, and three of the family emigrated to the United States, namely: James, who is connected with the Grain Growers Company and resides in Winnipeg, Canada; Margaret, whose death occurred at Detroit, Michigan; and Charles C., who is the youngest of the children. The schools of Aberdeen, Scotland, afforded Charles C. Massie his educational opportunities and after his graduation from Gordon College he became connected with the seed business in that city. About three years later he decided to leave his native land and in 1892 came alone to the United States, being at that time twenty years of age. On arriving in this country he at once made his way to the Northwest, with Minneapolis as his destination, and after reaching this city he secured employment with the firm of Northup, King & Company, conducting a wholesale seed business. Starting in an unimportant capacity, he was rapidly advanced as he proved his worth and ability and following the reorganization of the company in 1896 he was made secretary, which office he continued to fill until 1913. He has since served as president and during the period in which he has controlled the business he has expanded its scope, instituting a most progressive policy that has constituted a resultant element in the present success and commercial standing of the firm. He is vice president of the Seed Growers Marketing Company of Salt Lake City, Utah, and in 1914 he was honored with the presidency of the American Seed Trade Association, while for several years he was vice president of the Wholesale Grass Seed Dealers Association. In January, 1897, Mr. Massie was married to Miss Anna Dailey of Minneapolis, and they have become the parents of three children: Ruth, Charles G. and Catharine Jane. Mr. Massie is a member of the St. Anthony Commercial Club, the Minneapolis Athletic and Automobile clubs, and the Interlachen Country Club. He has never dissipated his energies over a broad field, but has continued in the line of activity which he first entered as a young man, gaining that specialized knowledge which makes him an expert in the seed business. He is a self-made man who has been both the architect and builder of his fortunes, and what he has accomplished represents the fit utilization of his innate powers and talents.
