Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical ======================================================== Vol II, pg 602-603 JUSTUS MATTHEWS, M.D. Dr. Justus Matthews, rhinologist and laryngologist of Minneapolis, was born in Foster, Minnesota, September 27, 1877, of the marriage of M. Irwin and Carrie (Henderson) Matthews, the former a native of Pennsylvania, while the latter was a Norwegian by birth. In 1872 the father came to the Northwest, settling in Minne­sota, where he devoted his attention to the occupation of farming. In the country schools of Minnesota, Justus Matthews received his early educa­tion and his professional training was acquired in the State University, from which he was graduated in 1905, with the M. D. degree. For eleven years he was con­nected with the Mayo clinic at Rochester, Minnesota, gaining valuable experience while associated with those noted surgeons, and in 1917 he came to Minneapolis, where he has since made his home. He specializes in the treatment of diseases of the nose and throat, in which he has become recognized as an authority. Dr. Matthews is a veteran of the Spanish-American war, in which he served as a member of the Thirteenth Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. He belongs to the Metropolitan Club of New York, the Chicago Club, and the Minneapolis, Woodhill Country and Minikahda clubs of this city.
