McCANN One of the successful and energetic business men of Minneapolis is Thomas A. McCann, vice president and general manager of the Shevlin, Carpenter, Clarke Company. He was born in Albany, New York, on the 26th of March, 1886, a son of Daniel F. and Mary (Shevlin) McCann, the former a native of Ireland and the latter of Albany, New York. The father came to the United States at the age of fourteen years and located in Albany, where he engaged in work as a contractor. In 1887 he moved with his family to Minneapolis and followed contracting in this city until the death of his wife in 1890. A short time after her demise he returned to the old home in Albany where he resided until his demise, which occurred in 1916. To Mr. and Mrs. McCann two sons and a daughter were born, Thomas A. being the eldest of the family. In the acquirement of his education Thomas A. McCann attended the Holy Cross Academy and subsequently was graduated from St. Francis Xavier's Preparatory School in New York city. He then enrolled in Georgetown University, at Washington, D. C. After putting his textbooks aside Mr. McCann started in to learn the lumber business, as an employe of the Shevlin, Carpenter Company in 1907, and later he was sent to Bemidji, Minnesota, with the Crookston Lumber Company. In 1909 he was made lumber manager and was active in that position until 1915, when he became general manager of the Libby Lumber Company of Libby, Montana. In 1916 he was made vice president and general manager of the Shevlin-Hixon Company of Bend, Oregon, and remained there until 1921, when he returned to Minneapolis as vice president and general manager of the Shevlin, Carpenter, Clarke Company. The Minneapolis concern is the parent firm of all the others and Mr. McCann holds the same position in many of the affiliated companies. Aside from the lumber business, he is a director in the First National Bank of Minneapolis. Mr. McCann is a man of practical methods, good judgment and general business sagacity and he is well deserving of the success he has achieved. At Springfield, Massachusetts, on the 30th of June, 1909, was celebrated the marriage of Mr. McCann and Miss Elizabeth Moore. To their union three children have been born: Elizabeth, who is eleven years of age; Thomas, Jr., eight years of age; and John, who is five years of age. Mrs. McCann is a woman of culture and refinement and is socially prominent. The political allegiance of Mr. McCann is given to the republican party and the principles for which it stands. He has had little time for party affairs, preferring to devote his entire time and attention to his business. He is a consistent communicant of the Catholic church and fraternally is identified with the Knights of Columbus. He holds membership in the Minneapolis Club, the Minikahda Club, the Woodhill Country Club, the Lafayette Club, and the Bohemian Club of San Francisco. Along the line of his work he is a member of the board of directors of the National Manufacturers Association and a member of the executive committee. For recreation he turns to outdoor sports and is particularly fond of golf and hunting. Mr. McCann possesses a genial and pleasing personality that wins for him many friends and which has, no doubt, been a dominant factor in his continued success.
