McCRACKEN Thomas G. McCracken, secretary of the Retail Hardware Mutual Fire Insurance Company, is a native of Minneapolis, his birth having occurred on the 24th of January, 1883, a son of Thomas and Mary E. (Hawley) McCracken, the former a native of Illinois and the latter of New York state. Their marriage was celebrated in Black River Falls, Wisconsin, and they came to Minneapolis in the early '70s, Mr. McCracken engaging in the hardware business as buyer for Pillsbury, Wood & Company. He continued in the hardware business for many years, achieving substantial success, and was one of the organizers of the Retail Hardware Mutual Fire Insurance Company, of which concern he was secretary at the time of his death, in 1902. His widow is residing in this city. To Mr. and Mrs. McCracken three sons and one daughter were born, Thomas G. being the youngest. The public schools of Minneapolis afforded Thomas G. McCracken his education and after graduating from high school he started in the insurance business with his father and has been connected with the Retail Hardware Mutual Fire Insurance Com­pany in various capacities. In 1910 he was made assistant secretary, and in 1920, upon the death of Mr. Mathews, he took over the duties of his present office. Mr. McCracken is thoroughly familiar with every phase of the business and he discharges the many duties devolving upon him to the complete satisfaction of all concerned. He is a member of the board of directors of the National Association Mutual Insurance Company and stands high in business circles. In Minneapolis, on the 24th of April, 1911, occurred the marriage of Thomas G. McCracken to Miss Ruth Northrop, a daughter of Eaton B. Northrop and a descendant of old and honored families of St. Paul and Minneapolis. To Mr. and Mrs. McCracken two children have been born: Elizabeth, nine years of age; and Jean, aged four. The political allegiance of Thomas McCracken is given to the republican party and he maintains an active interest in party affairs. His religious faith is that of the Episcopal church and he is a consistent communicant of St. Luke's. He is an active member of the Civic & Commerce Association and of the Rotary Club, and socially he holds membership in the Minneapolis Athletic, Minneapolis Automobile and Minneapolis Golf clubs. During the World war he gave generously of his time and money in the promotion of the government's interests and was on the committee in charge of the insurance division during the Liberty Loan and Red Cross drives. Mr. McCracken finds his greatest recreation in outdoor sports and is particularly fond of motoring and playing golf. He is a vocalist of some repute in the city and has sung in many of the choirs of the leading churches, among them the Church of the Redeemer, the First Presbyterian church and St. Mark's church of St. Paul. Mr. and Mrs. McCracken have many friends and are numbered among the prominent citizens of Minneapolis.
