McLEAN Milford O. McLean, president of the Family Shoe Store, is a native of Minneapolis. His birth occurred on the 23d of January, 1888, a son of Hiram M. and Linda (Marsh) McLean, the former a native of Iowa and the latter of New York state. They came to Minnesota at different periods of the early days and were married in this state, first settling near Lake Crystal. In 1882 they came to Minneapolis and Mr. McLean engaged in the commission business, starting on Bridge square. Later he formed a partnership with a Mr. Farmer and the business was conducted as Farmer & McLean for some time. Subsequently he became a partner of H. S. Smith and the name was changed to H. S. Smith & Company. Their business was located on First avenue, North, and that association was maintained until the death of Mr. Smith, when the business became McLean, Bryant & Company and located on present Commission row. Mr. McLean was active in the conduct of that business until his demise in 1897. He was a man of well proven ability and the best principles of honesty and integrity governed him in all transactions. He was held in high confidence and esteem by all and his death was deeply regretted by his family and many friends. His widow survives him. To Mr. and Mrs. McLean the following children were born: Frances, whose death occurred at the age of sixteen years: Milford O., whose name introduces this review; and Hiram, who married Miss Loretta Marie McKenna and resides in Minneapolis. The public schools of Minneapolis afforded Milford O. McLean his preliminary education and for a time he attended high school. At the age of twelve years he started in to learn the shoe business, working during summer vacations in the Plymouth Clothing Company's store. He held various positions of minor importance until he was eighteen years of age, when he resigned as clerk in the shoe department and became associated with the S. T. Sorenson Shoe Company of St. Paul. He became manager of the Sorenson Shoe Store, in which position he was active four years. At the termination of that time he determined to go into business on his own account and subsequently formed a partnership with Mr. Martin and they operated a business under the name of Martin & McLean at No. 211 Nicollet avenue for some time. In 1915 Mr. McLean became associated with Charles Chase and in 1916 they incorporated under the firm style of the Family Shoe Store, located at No. 227 Nicollet avenue, of which Mr. McLean is president. On the 19th of January, 1910, in Minneapolis, was celebrated the marriage of Mr. McLean to Miss Bessie M. Martin, a daughter of R. H. Martin. To Mr. and Mrs. McLean two children have been born: Frances Margaret, eleven years of age; and Mary Elizabeth, aged two. Mrs. McLean is a woman of culture and refinement and personal charm. In his political views Mr. McLean is a stanch supporter of the republican party and the principles for which it stands. His religious faith is manifest in his membership in Simpson Methodist church, and fraternally he is identified with the Royal Arcanum. He also belongs to the Minneapolis Civic & Commerce Association.
