O. MICHELSEN Minneapolis is proud to number among her native sons R. O. Michelsen, secretary and office manager of the Minneapolis Artificial Limb Company. His birth occurred on the 30th of July, 1888, a son of Hans and Amelia (Rassmuson) Michelsen. Hans Michelsen was born in Bergen, Norway, and came to this country in 1880, locating in Minneapolis. He engaged in the shoe business and is still active in that connection, at the age of sixty-six years. He has achieved well-merited success and is one of the most highly esteemed citizens of Minneapolis. His wife was a daughter of Hans Rassmuson, also of Bergen, Norway. Mrs. Michelsen is the only one of her father's family who ever came to the United States and her father died in his native country in his eighty-sixth year. R. O. Michelsen received his education in the public schools of this city up to the eighth grade. He then took a six months' commercial course in the Minneapolis School of Commerce and his first position in the business world was as delivery boy for Alex. Matheson, tailor. He remained in the employ of Mr. Matheson for one year and then from 1902 to 1918 worked as salesman for the Erickson Artificial Limb Company. His close application to the thing at hand and inherent business ability brought him to the attention of officers of the Minneapolis Artificial Limb Company and in 1919 he was made secretary and office manager of the concern. He is making this line of business his life study and has been a dominant factor in the continued growth the business has enjoyed. In 1918 he also became a stockholder in the company. In July, 1918, R. 0. Michelsen entered the service of the United States in the World war, as a non-commissioned officer. He was sent to Camp Wadsworth, South Carolina, for thirty days and sailed for France on the 30th of August, 1918. He took part in the Argonne drive, September 26th to November 11th, and after the signing of the armistice closed hostilities he remained with his company in France until the 11th of July, 1919. He then returned to the United States and received his honorable discharge at Camp Des Moines in Iowa. In his political views R. O. Michelsen is a stanch republican and he maintains an active interest in party affairs. Fraternally he is identified with the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and his religious faith is that of the Lutheran church. Mr. Michelsen is unmarried. For recreation from his many business duties he turns to the great outdoors and he is fond of fishing and other outdoor sports.
