MURPHY Edward B. Murphy has firm belief in the future of Minneapolis and since coming to this city he has played a prominent part in the furtherance of its business interests. He was born in Bardstown, Kentucky, on the 23d of August, 1876, a son of Steven N. and Mary M. (McMeekin) Murphy. The father was a native of Kentucky and engaged in breeding race horses, winning more than local repute in that connection. His demise occurred at the age of fifty-two years. Mrs. Murphy survived her husband until 1910, and was eighty years of age at the time of her demise. In the acquirement of his education Edward B. Murphy attended the public schools of his birthplace and also those of St. Louis, Missouri. Upon the completion of his education he entered the hide and wool business with James Johnston of St. Louis and remained with him for five years. He was then transferred to Chicago to take charge of the branch office of the company in that city and was manager of that office for three years. At the termination of that time he went to Kansas City, Missouri, for the United States Printing Company, as manager and he served in that capacity and as traveling representative for fourteen years, his territory embracing the Northwest and he was frequently in Minneapolis. This city appealed to him as a lively metropolis with a successful future and in 1910 he became associated with the International Stock Food Company in its sales department here. Two years later he entered the broker's business, handling paper bags, cotton and jute for the milling trade, in which enterprise he continues. He is also owner of the Minnetonka Realty Company, with offices both in this city and in Excelsior. Mr. Murphy has made good use of hie opportunities, and has prospered from year to year, conducting all business matters carefully and suc­cessfully. He owns a beautiful home in Minnetonka, valued at twelve thousand dollars. In October, 1896, in St. Louis, Missouri, occurred the marriage of Mr. Murphy and Miss Grace L. Shivell, a daughter of Charles W. Shivell of Ohio. Mr. and Mrs. Murphy have the following children: Florence M., twenty-four years of age; Elizabeth F., fifteen years of age; William B., aged twelve; and Mary B., five years of age. Mrs. Murphy is a woman of charming personality and she takes an active and prominent part in club and social affairs. In his political views Mr. Murphy is a republican and he takes an active interest in party affairs. He was elected township supervisor of Excelsior, Minnesota, and was chairman of the board there for one term. Fraternally he is identified with the Masons, having attained both the York and Scottish rites. He is readily conceded to be an exemplary member of the craft. His religious faith is that of St. Marks Episcopal church and he is an active worker in its interests. Socially he is identified with the Minneapolis Athletic Club, the Minnetonka Country Club and the Minneapolis Masonic Club. Mr. Murphy is an enthusiastic golfer and likewise enjoys fishing and all outdoor sports. He is a man of genial and pleasing personality and wields a great influence for good in this city.
