Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical ======================================================== Vol II, pg 588-591 LOUIS NATHANSON One of the energetic and substantial business men of Minneapolis is Louis Nathan-son, president of the Louis Nathanson Company, wholesale and retail cigars and tobacco. He was born in New York city on the 17th of July, 1875, a son of Benjamin and Yetta (Lippman) Nathanson, natives of Germany. His parents came to the United States in the early '70s and located in Minneapolis in the early part of the '80s. Mr. and Mrs. Nathanson are still living and enjoying the best of health. Their friends are legion and they are held in high confidence and esteem by all who know them. To their union seven sons and one daughter have been born, Louis being the eldest. The public schools of New York city afforded Louis Nathanson his early education and after coming to Minneapolis with his parents he took a business course. After putting his textbooks aside he accepted a position as a bookkeeper and accountant and was active in that capacity for seven years. In early life he formed the habit of paying close attention to the thing at hand and he took advantage of every opportunity to advance. Subsequently he went on the road for a tobacco house, selling cigars, and he was employed in that capacity for several well known firms throughout the city and state. In 1907 he engaged in business on his own account under the name of Louis Nathanson Company, wholesale cigars, and he achieved well-merited success from the start. Later he established a number of retail stores and today he operates eight retail stores in addition to the wholesale business. He is likewise owner of the General Motor Company. Preeminently an organizer and promoter, Mr. Nathanson has been successful in the handling of large affairs and has proven his power to coordinate and develop the various phases of modern industrial life. An unusual prosperity has rej suited from unusual ability and has made the name of Louis Nathanson synonymous with activity and accomplishment. In Minneapolis, in 1900, was celebrated the marriage of Mr. Nathanson and Miss Ida Benson, whose demise occurred in 1922. She was a member of one of the oldest and most honored families in Minneapolis and her death came as a severe shock to her family and many friends in this city. She was the mother of one child, Margaret, who is now Mrs. Morris Slate. Since attaining his majority Mr. Nathanson has been a stanch supporter of the republican party and the principles for which it stands. He is essentially public-spirited and his cooperation can always be counted upon in the furtherance of any movement for the development and improvement of the city. For three years he was a member of the Minneapolis Civil Service Commission and he was president of that organization for two years. Fraternally he is identified with the Masons and he has attained the Mystic Shrine by the Scottish Rite route. Socially he is connected with the Lincoln Club and the Minneapolis Automobile Club. He is likewise a member of the Gymal Doled. Along strictly business lines he holds membership in the Cigar and Tobacco Dealers Association and he has been president of the association for seven years. During the World war he gave generously of his time and money in the furtherance of the government's interests and he was active in all bond drives and in the promotion of other worthy causes. For recreation Mr. Nathanson turns to outdoor sports and he is particularly fond of motoring, camping and fishing. He is a self-made man in the truest sense of the word and he well merits the position of affluence he has attained. He possesses a genial and pleasing personality and his friends are legion.
