WALTER H. NEWTON A brilliant record is that which has been made by Walter H. Newton, who, scarcely yet in the prime of life, has attained prominence at the bar and in political circles as well, being now member of congress, where he is already regarded as one of the strongest and safest men in the national legislative body. Minneapolis is proud to number him among her native sons. He was born October 10, 1880, his parents being Thomas R. and Mary E. (Hughes) Newton. He represents an old American family that was established in the new world during colonial days. He attended the public schools of this city and also the University of Minnesota, where he prepared for his professional career, being graduated from the law department with the degree of LL. B. as a member of the class of 1905. He was associated with the Dodson-Fisher-Brockman Company in a legal capacity until 1910, when he formed a law partnership with Congressman Frank M. Nye under the firm style of Nye & Newton. He has made notable progress at the bar. While advancement in the law is proverbially slow, no dreary novitiate awaited him. He brought to the starting point of his career not only broad legal knowledge but certain rare gifts-a pleasing personality, a convincing manner of speech and a tact that enables him to know when to press a point. He received the appointment of first assistant county attorney for Hennepin county on the 1st of January, 1915, and he has always been an active republican since attaining his majority, filling a position on the executive committee of the party for Hennepin county from 1908 until 1912. He was also secretary of the local Roosevelt organization in 1912. In November, 1918, he was elected to the United States congress and so excellent was the record which he made during his first term that he was reelected in November, 1920, and also in November, 1922. His congressional career is one which reflects credit and honor upon himself and has been highly satisfactory to his constituents. He thoroughly studies questions under consideration and his judgment is sound, displaying at all times marked devotion to the public good. The fifth district of Minnesota has reason to be proud of its representative in the national legislative halls. He is a member of the committee on interstate and foreign commerce of the house of representatives. On the 14th of June, 1905, Mr. Newton was married in Minneapolis to Miss Cora M. Noracon, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis C. Noracon, and they have become parents of two sons and a daughter. Grace Laura, Walter Hughes, Jr., and John Marshall. The religious faith of the family is that of the Baptist church. Mr. Newton is a York Rite Mason and a member of the Mystic Shrine, and also has membership with the Royal Arcanum and with the Sons of the American Revolution. In club circles, too, he is well known, belonging to the Minneapolis Athletic Club, the University Club of Washington and the Calhoun Commercial Club, while his interest in matters of local concern is evidenced in his connection with the Civic & Commerce Association. He has always been thoroughly alive to the best interests of the community and in entering the broader field of national service is giving to his country the benefit of devoted and public-spirited effort.
