NICHOLS Various corporate interests profit by the business ability and enterprise of Edward B. Nichols, who is now president of the Nichols & Tuttle Company, Incorporated, president of the Pequot Land Company and also secretary and treasurer of the Portland Avenue Improvement Association. He came to the Mississippi valley from New England, his birth having occurred in Lyme, Connecticut, on the 2d of May, 1864, his parents being John C. and Jennie (Ray) Nichols. Reared in the east, he attended the public schools of Wethersfield and of Hartford, Connecticut, and also of Boston, Massachusetts, receiving the thorough training that has produced the high standard of the schools of that section of the country. Starting out in the business world after laying aside his textbooks, Edward B. Nichols became a salesman for E. N. Kellogg of Hartford, Connecticut, and later was associated with M. Bennett, Jr., manager of the Scottish Union & National Insurance Company of Hartford. He came to Minneapolis on the 1st of November, 1886, and for nearly a quarter of a century was secretary of the Corser Investment Company, after which he became associated with William B. Tuttle of the Nichols & Tuttle Company, Incorporated. Throughout the period of his residence in Minneapolis, covering thirty-seven years, he has been connected with this line of activity and his opinions are recognized as authority upon matters pertaining to land values and real estate. The development of his powers has brought about his gradual advancement in the business world and today he controls important interests as president of the Nichols & Tuttle Company; nor have his efforts been confined alone to this one corporation, for he is also president of the Pequot Land Company and secretary 'and treasurer of the Portland Avenue Improvement Association. All of these companies have been contributing factors to the substantial growth and improvement of the city. He looks at every proposition from the standpoint of a broad-minded man whose interest is not alone in the attainment of success but in civic improvement as well. On the 15th of May, 1888, Mr. Nichols was married at Hartford, Connecticut, to Miss Martha Ann Stoddard, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James A. Stoddard. Mr. and Mrs. Nichols have a son and a daughter. The son, John Stoddard Nichols, was a first lieutenant in Battery A of the Minnesota Field Artillery during the World war and returned from France as captain of the Eighty-eighth Division, Field Artillery. He is now vice president of Nichols & Tuttle Company. The daughter, Edna, married John Upton Crosby, and they have a son and a daughter, John Nichols Crosby and Marthann Crosby. Mr. Edward B. Nichols gives his political support to the republican party, and while keeping well informed on the vital questions and issues of the day, he has never sought nor desired political preferment. He belongs to the Minneapolis Athletic Club, to the Minneapolis Real Estate Board, to the National Association of Real Estate Exchanges and to the Minneapolis Underwriters Association, and through his connection with these organizations keeps in touch with the trend of progress and aids in advancing the standards of business. He belongs to the Park Avenue Congregational church, in which he is serving as chairman of the board of trustees. His friends-and they are legion-speak of him as a "high-class man." He finds his recreation in travel, in hunting and in fishing, greatly enjoying the out-of-doors as well as visits to many places of modern and historic interest.
