PHELPS Charles E. Phelps, starting out in life a poor boy, is now one of the successful printers of Minneapolis, engaged in business under the name of the Brown & Phelps Company, of which he is the president. He began learning his trade when but thirteen years of age, previous to which time he had spent his youth on a farm, his birth having occurred in Meeker county, Minnesota. His early experiences were those of the farm bred lad and he attended the grade schools until he reached the age of thirteen, when he began learning the printer's trade, working first on the Litchfield (Minn.) Independent. Anxious to enjoy better educational facilities he worked his way through high school, providing for his expenses during that period, and steadily he advanced in his trade, becoming a practical printer. Watching his opportunities for advancement and utilizing every chance to develop his powers and improve his business prospects, in January, 1902, he organized the firm of Brown & Phelps and in 1913 the business was incorporated under the name of the Brown & Phelps Company, of which Mr. Phelps is now president. For years they confined their operations to typesetting but in 1921 concentrated their labors upon the printing business entirely and have gained a gratifying patronage in this connection. In 1890 Mr. Phelps was married to Miss Susan L. Miller of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and they have become the parents of six children: Ethelwyn S.; William M.; Louise, now Mrs. Eugene Scriver; Charles P.; Frederick T. and Dorothy M. When the United States entered the World war Charles P. Phelps at once enlisted, joining the colors in May, 1917, as a private in the Marine Corps. He served for twenty-eight months, a longer term than moat American boys. He was promoted to a second lieutenancy, then advanced to the rank of first lieutenant and finally became captain, receiving his honorable discharge in August, 1919. He is now vice president of the Brown & Phelps Company. Fraternally Charles E. Phelps is a Mason, belonging to Hennepin Lodge, No. 4, F. & A. M.; to Columbia Chapter, R. A. M.; to Darius Commandery, K. T.; and is also identified with the Knights of Pythias. He was for four years in Masonic work and was senior warden when press of business caused him to relinquish the working part of the organization. He fias membership in the Minneapolis Athletic Club, the Manufacturers Club, the Golden Valley Golf Club and also in the Civic & Commerce Association and is interested in all those activities which make for the benefit and upbuilding of the city and the advancement of the state's welfare. In his own business career his course has been one of steady progress, whereby he has advanced from a humble position as an apprentice to the printing business and is today at the head of a large and constantly growing business of his own.
