REEVES Each step in the career of Gardiner H. Reeves has been a forward one and each change in his business connections has marked an advance. He is now numbered among the successful coal operators of Minneapolis and a large commercial enterprise stands as a monument to his progressive spirit and executive ability. A native of Maine, he attended the public schools of the Pine Tree state to the age of twelve years, when he came to the Northwest, Minnesota being his destination. On starting out in life for himself he took up the study of telegraphy and became night operator for the old St. Paul & Duluth Railroad Company. He remained in the service of that corporation for fifteen years and during that period was steadily advanced from one position to another of greater importance and responsibility, becoming successively ticket, freight and passenger agent. While still in the employ of that road he had embarked in the coal business and in 1896 he joined the Lehigh Valley Coal Company as sales agent, continuing with that concern until 1905. He then became executive head of the Northwest Retail Coal Dealers Association and in 1910 established himself in business in Minneapolis, organizing the Reeves Coal & Dock Company, of which he is the president and principal stockholder. Since its inception the undertaking has enjoyed a rapid growth and the business has become one of large proportions, one hundred persons being employed in its conduct, while the operations of the firm extend over Iowa, North and South Dakota, Wisconsin and Minnesota. Mr. Reeves has made a close study of the business in which he is engaged and in its management displays enterprise, foresight and marked capability. His commercial transactions have ever been characterized by strict and unswerving integrity and his standing in business circles of the city is an enviable one. On November 14, 1908, at Minneapolis, Mr. Reeves was united in marriage to Miss Annie Hart of Henderson, Kentucky, and they have become the parents of two children, Mabel and Gregory. Mr. Reeves is a member of St. Paul's Episcopal church and he gives his political support to the republican party because he believes that its policy best conserves national progress and promotes public stability. He stands high in Masonry, having attained the thirty-second degree in the Scottish Rite Consistory and the Shrine, and is also a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, the Athletic Club, the Minneapolis Golf Club and the Union League Club of Chicago. He spends as much time as possible in the open and finds recreation in fishing and hunting. His life from early boyhood has been one of untiring activity and to him has come the crown of earnest, conscientious effort-success and an honored name.
