Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical ======================================================== Vol II, pg 410 BERGMANN RICHARDS Possessing all the requisites of an able lawyer, Bergmann Richards has established his position as a leading representative of the Minneapolis bar and his professional colleagues and the general public unite in bearing testimony as to his high character and superior mind. He is a native of Washington, D. C., and his father, Charles N. Richards, was born in Quincy, Massachusetts, in which city he always maintained his residence, although he spent the greater part of his life in Washington, being in the employ of the government. He was an honored veteran of the Civil war, entering the service as a private in the Union army and becoming a commissioned officer. He was wounded at the battle of Antietam and his hospital nurse, Miss Mary Bergmann afterward became his wife. Lysander Richards, his father, was a member of the upper house of the Massachusetts legislature and a contemporary of the noted American states­men, Daniel Webster and Charles Sumner. In the acquirement of an education Bergmann Richards attended the public schools of Washington, D. C., and then entered Harvard College, from which he was graduated in 1909 with the Bachelor of Arts degree, while four years later he completed a law course in that institution. In 1909, after finishing his academic work, he went abroad, spending a year in travel, and during that time he took tip the study of languages and international law. His initial experience along professional lines was gained with the law firm of Wilson, Mercer, Swan & Stinchfield of Minneapolis and at the end of two years he was admitted to a partnership. Following the entry of the United States into the World war he was called to the colors and was assigned to the diplomatic service, being sent to Copenhagen, Denmark, as assistant to the American minister. He remained in that city for a year and after receiving his discharge returned to Minneapolis. In December, 1918, he became a member of the law firm of Snyder, Gale & Richards, with which he has since been connected. He is trial lawyer for the firm, which has been accorded a liberal clientele, and has successfully handled important litigated interests. He is recognized as a ready and resourceful advocate and a safe counselor and is well versed in the principles of Jurisprudence, clear and concise in his presentation of a case, logical in his deductions and sound in his reasoning. Mr. Richards married Miss Marguerite Sexton, a daughter of Charles W. Sexton of Minneapolis, and they have become the parents of a son, Sexton, and a daughter, Marguerite Ann. Mr. Richards is a member of the Lincoln, Skylight, Lafayette, Minne­apolis and Minikahda clubs and he is also president of the Harvard Club of Minnesota and a member of Delta Upsilon, a college fraternity. He is an exponent of all that is highest and best in his profession and is conceded to be one of the most talented and also one of the most highly esteemed attorneys of Minneapolis.
