Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical ======================================================== Vol II, pg 681-682 ANTHONY RUD A self-made man and one of the most public-spirited citizens of Minneapolis is Anthony Rud, who was born in Norway, on the 8th of March, 1873, a son of Hans O. and Gunhilde Rud. In 1882 his parents brought him to the United States and located in Minneapolis, where for many years his father had charge of the grain door department of the Milwaukee Railroad shops. He was a successful business man and won the confidence and esteem of all those with whom he came into contact. His demise occurred in 1908. Anthony Rud was but nine years of age when he came to Minneapolis with his parents, consequently he attended the public schools in this city, and after graduating from high school took a business course. . In 1892 he went to North Dakota, where he spent one summer in farming, and then returned to this city and entered the sash and door business, in the employ of Simonson Brothers. He learned wood turning and band sawing and remained with Simonson Brothers about seven years. About that time the Spanish-American war broke out and Anthony Rud put all personal interests aside and enlisted in the defense of his adopted country. He enlisted in the navy and spent fourteen months cruising about the West Indies on the vessel which is now the Mayflower, the President's yacht. At the close of the war he came back to Minneapolis and entered the liquor business, which he conducted successfully for twenty years. For a time he handled insurance, founding the Rud-Williams Agency, but in 1920 he disposed of his interests in that concern. He now spends his entire time in looking after his personal property, having become a man of affluence and the owner of much valuable real estate, etc., throughout the city and state. The success Mr. Rud has achieved is the result of his keen business ability, determination and untiring energy. As president of the Eleventh Ward Improvement Association he is a prime factor in the city's advancement. He is chairman of the Auditing Board of the Franklin Cooperative Creamery Association, full particulars of which appear on another page of this work. On the 17th of December, 1901, was celebrated the marriage of Anthony Rud to Miss Marie Renter, and to their union three children have been born: Norman, lone and Bernice. Mrs. Rud is a woman of culture and refinement and she is socially prominent. In his political views Mr. Rud is a stanch republican, having firm belief in the principles of that party as factors in good government. Fraternally he is identified with the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and the Sons of Norway. As previously stated he is president of the Eleventh Ward Improvement Association, which office he has held for two years, and he is likewise an active contributor to the Franklin Avenue Business Men's Association. His religious faith is that of the Olivet Lutheran church, of which he is a consistent communicant.
