Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical Vol II, pg 502-505 ANTHONY XAVIER SCHALL, Jr. Anthony Xavier Schall, Jr., a veteran of the Spanish-American and World wars is a prominent member of the Minneapolis bar and his ability is indicated by the large practice accorded him. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, June 9 1880 a son of Anthony X. and Mary Gertrude (McLaughlin) Schall, natives of Pennsylvania. For a number of years the father was identified with business interests of New York city and Brooklyn, but in 1892 he came to the Northwest, locating in Minneapolis. Ho became secretary of the Minneapolis Tribune and served as president of the Minneapolis Press Club, remaining in this city until 1917, when he went to Cleveland, Ohio where he is now residing. Anthony X. Schall, Jr., completed his high school course at Duluth, Minnesota, after which he enlisted for service in the Spanish-American war, becoming a private of Company I, Thirteenth Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, and winning promotion to the rank of corporal. When hostilities with Spain were ended he entered the law department of the University of Minnesota, from which he was graduated in 1901 winning the LL. B. degree. While pursuing his studies he was a captain in the Minnesota University Cadet Corps, which he commanded during 1903 and 1904, and following his graduation from law school he served for two years as deputy county auditor of Hennepin county. In 1908 he organized Company M, First Infantry, Minnesota National Guard, of which he was captain for four years. It was in 1904 that Mr. Schall was admitted to the Minnesota bar and began his professional career in Minneapolis, where he continued to practice until the United States entered the World war, when he organized a regiment for Colonel Roosevelt, who was, however, obliged to relinquish his plan of equipping an overseas division, as the government was not in favor of the project. One of Mr. Schall's most cherished possessions is a letter written him by the Colonel on the 10th of May, 1917, expressing his appreciation of his services in raising a regiment to accompany him overseas. All that remained of the organization became a part of the Second Minnesota Field Artillery, organized by the state under authority of the war department, and Mr. Schall was commissioned major. The men stood ready for service, but the regiment was disbanded in May, 1918, and was thus left without a federal status. Mr. Schall then received the commission of first lieutenant and was sent to Camp Joseph E. Johnston, winning promotion to the rank of captain six months later. He was next ordered to Camp Greene, where he was placed in charge of a company of colored troops, and was about to embark with his command for overseas service when the armistice was signed. He was recommended for the commission of major, but did not receive the appointment. In January, 1919, he was stationed with the Motor Transport Corps at Camp Jessup and from there was transferred to Watertown, Massachusetts, acting as a member of the arsenal claims board until August 7, 1919, when he received his discharge. Returning to Minneapolis, he resumed his law practice and while advancement at the bar is proverbially slow, he has made substantial progress, readily mastering the intricacies of the law and preparing his cases with great thoroughness, precision and skill. He has demonstrated his ability to handle important litigated interests and his business in the courts is steadily increasing in volume and importance. On the 31st of August, 1904, Mr. Schall was united in marriage to Miss Ethel Frances Cannon of Duluth, Minnesota, and they have five children: Marion G., Anthony X. (III), Richard C., Charles L. and Laurel Joy. Mr. Schall is connected with the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and is a member of all the Masonic bodies, including the Scottish Rite Consistory, and Zuhrah Temple of the Mystic Shrine. He is serving as president of the Lake Harriet Commercial Club and his professional connections are with the Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota State and American Bar associations. His attention is chiefly given to his law practice and in a calling demanding a keen intellect and unremitting industry he is steadily advancing. He is highly regarded in professional circles of the city and has many friends, whose esteem he has won and retained by reason of his high principles and fine personal qualities.
