Francis Schefcik, an oculist and aurist, who after thorough training in this country and abroad is now successfully practicing in Minneapolis, was born in New York city, May 11, 1872, a son of Joseph F. and Anna (Huss) Schefcik, who were natives of Bohemia. The mother came to the United States with her parents in 1841. The father was for a time in Mexico, but after the death of the Emperor Maxi­milian came to the United States and here joined the United States army, with which he served until his retirement in 1894. He entered the Civil war as a lieutenant colonel and was afterward advanced to the rank of colonel of the Sixty-ninth Regiment of the New York Volunteer Infantry. Following the war he was made a major, but was later again promoted to lieutenant colonel. He died in the year 1900, while his widow survived until 1916. They were the parents of a son and three daughters. J. Francis Schefcik was the third in order of birth. He pursued his early education in the public schools of New York city and completed an academic course in the Univer­sity of Illinois, with the class of 1892. He then took up the study of pharmacy there and was graduated in 1894. He pursued his medical studies in the University of Minnesota, winning his professional degree in 1900. He became a resident of Minneapolis in 1888 and following his graduation from the State University he entered upon active practice at Mapleton, Minnesota, where he remained for a year and also spent a similar period at Hutchinson, this state. Subsequently he pursued postgraduate work in Vienna and in London, remaining abroad for a year and a half, after which he returned to Minneapolis to enter upon practice as an oculist and aurist. He has made steady advancement in the field of his specialty and is recognized as one of the strong and forceful representatives in his branch of practice. He is a member of the staff of St. Barnabas Hospital and for eight years has been professor of materia medica in the University of Minnesota. He was likewise assistant city chemist for a short time. On the 6th of November, 1895, in Glencoe, Minnesota, Dr. Schefcik was married to Miss Emma W. Rasper, a daughter of Anthony and Anna Kasper and a representative of one of the old families of this section, her father having long been connected with the grain trade here. Dr. Schefcik is a life member of the Minneapolis Athletic Club and also belongs to the Lincoln Club, the Minneapolis Golf Club, the Minneapolis Auto Club and the Yachtmen's Association cf America. He is now commodore of the Minne apolis Motor Boat Club, was formerly vice admiral of the Mississippi Valley Power Boat Club and chairman of its cruise committee. He also belongs to the St. Paul Motor Boat Club and is the owner of the fine motor boat "Miss Minneapolis," which was the first mile-a-minute boat built and which participated in racing events all over the United States. There is also a military chapter in the life record of Dr. Schefcik, for he was commissioned a captain in the Medical Corps during the World war and also assisted in the war work as a member of various boards in Minneapolis. His political allegiance is given to the republican party, of which he has always been a stalwart advocate. Fraternally he is a Mason, who has taken the degrees of both the York and Scottish Rites and is a Mystic Shriner. He belongs also to the Knights of the Maccabees, to the Modern Woodmen of America and the Modern Brotherhood of America. His pronounced social qualities make for popularity wherever he is known. He is a high-class sportsman and most of all a prominent physician whose highly developed powers have brought him eminence in the field of his chosen profession.
