Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical Vol II, pg 546-547 HENRY FREDERICK SCHULTZ Henry Frederick Schultz has devoted thirty-four years to the practice of law and since 1902 he has been identified with the Minneapolis bar, being now a member of the firm of Selover, Schultz, Mansfield & Bryan. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri. January 14, 1861, a son of Henry A. and Caroline (Mattice) Schultz, the former of whom was born on the Rhine, in Germany, while the latter was a native of Paris, France. The paternal great-grandfather, Henry Schultz, was a member of the Prussian reichstag and following the defeat of the effort to establish a constitutional govern­ment, his Son, Frederick Schultz, left his native land and came with his family to the United States in 1848, locating in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In Dubuque, Iowa, Henry A. Schultz was united in marriage to Miss Mattice. His demise occurred in Iowa in 1915. While residing in Germany he worked as an apothecary and after coming to this country he engaged in the contracting business. He served as a non­commissioned officer in the Union army during the Civil war and was wounded at the siege of Vicksburg. He was loyal to the interests of his adopted country and was a great admirer of General Ulysses S. Grant. Mrs. Schultz survived her husband for two years, passing away in 1917. After completing his public school course Henry F. Schultz became a student at the University of Iowa, from which he was graduated in 1888, with the degree of LL. B. He was admitted to the bar at Iowa City and there engaged in practice until 1902, when he came to Minneapolis, where he has since successfully followed his profession, being now la member of the well known law firm of Selover, Schultz, Mansfield & Bryan, while he is also a director of the Marquette National Bank of this city. Mr. Schultz was married March 14, 1889, to Miss Caroline Griffith of Iowa Falls, Iowa, and they have become the parents of a son, Clifford Griffith. He was graduated from the University of Minnesota with the degrees of A. B. and M. A. and afterward entered Harvard College, which conferred upon him the LL. B. degree. In 1916 he was admitted to the bar and is practicing as a member of the firm of Selover, Schultz, Mansfield & Bryan. He is a veteran of the World war, receiving his training at Camp Dodge, and was assigned to the Fifty-fifth Coast Artillery. In 1917 he was ordered overseas and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant, being placed in charge of a battery. He remained at the front until the close of the war and was mustered out at Brooklyn, New York. He was the first secretary of the state security commission of Minnesota, being appointed by Governor Bernquist, and resigned to enter the' service. After receiving his discharge he returned to Minneapolis and has since engaged in the practice of law in this city. Mr. Henry F. Schultz is a member of the Minneapolis Athletic Club and the Interlachen Club and he is also identified with the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and the Masonic fraternity, belonging to the Scottish Rite Consistory and to Zuhrah Temple of the Mystic Shrine, while his professional connections are with the Hennepin County and American Bar Associations.
