Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical Vol II, pg 394-397 GILBERT SEASHORE, M. D. In the field of professional service Dr. Gilbert Seashore has made continuous progress, gleaning from comprehensive study and research and from practical experience valuable truths in connection with the science of medicine. He is recognized as one of the leading physicians of Minneapolis and is serving as coroner of Hennepin county, having been retained in that office for the past fourteen years. He was born in Boone county, Iowa, July 14, 1874, a son of Alfred and Sophia Seashore, both of whom were natives of Sweden. In 1864 they came to the United States, making their way to Boone county, Iowa, where the father purchased a farm, and he continued to reside on that property until his death, bringing his land under a high state of cultivation. The mother is living in Minneapolis. Reared on a farm, Gilbert Seashore attended the country schools of Boone county, Iowa, and in 1890 he became a student at Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minnesota, from which he was graduated in 1896, with the A. B. degree. For the next two years he devoted his attention to teaching, acting as principal of a school, and he then entered the medical school of the University cf Iowa at Iowa City, which he attended for two years, completing his professional training in the State University of Minnesota, which conferred upon him the M. D. degree in 1902. The next year was spent as intern at the Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis and he then opened an office in this city, where he practiced continuously until 1907, when he went abroad, taking postgraduate work at Vienna, Austria, Berlin, Germany, and also in Italy, thus having the benefit of instruction under the most noted physicians and surgeons of Europe. In 1908 he returned to Minneapolis, where he has since successfully followed his profession, and in addition to caring for a large private practice he is also serving as coroner of Hennepin county. He has filled that office continuously since 1908, his long retention therein being unmistakable proof of the high regard entertained for his ability on the part of his fellow citizens. He has never considered his professional education as completed with the termination of his college course but has remained throughout his life a close and discriminating student of medical science, and that his knowledge is broad and his judgment sound is evidenced by the excellent results which follow his ministrations to the sick. In 1917 Dr. Seashore was united in marriage to Miss Signa Blomquist of Minneapolis, and they have a daughter, Marian. As a member of the Civic & Commerce Association, Dr. Seashore does all in his power to promote the welfare and development of his city and he is also identified with the Odin Club. He is a thirty-second degree Mason and a member of Zuhrah Temple of the Mystic Shrine and he is also connected with the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, while his professional relations are with the Hennepin County and Minnesota State Medical societies and the American Medical Association. He has never been content with mediocrity and is a man of high purposes and ideals who has utilized every opportunity to perfect himself in his chosen vocation, and his pronounced ability and genuine personal worth have won for him the respect and esteem of his professional colleagues and also of the general public.
