Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical Vol III, pg 586 JALMAR HENDRIK SIMONS, M. D. Dr. Jalmar Hendrik Simons, a prominent member of the medical profession of Minneapolis, is devoting his attention to surgical cases and is one of the leading gynecologists of the city. He was born in Waseca, Minnesota, November 7, 1884, a son of Barnt and Emily (Thompson) Simons, the former a native of Norway and the latter of Wisconsin. In 1857, when but five years of age, the father was brought to the United States by his parents, who settled in Waseca, Minnesota. On reaching years of maturity Barnt Simons there engaged in merchandising, successfully continuing his operations in that field for a number of years, and he is now living retired in Minneapolis. After completing his course in the high school at Waseca, Minnesota, Dr. Simons became a student at the State University, from which he was graduated in 1908 with the degree of Bachelor of Science, while two years later that institution conferred upon him the M. D. degree. The following year was spent as interne at St. Barnabas Hospital and he then opened an office in this city, where he has since successfully followed his profession. He is concentrating his attention upon surgical work, in which he has developed expert skill, and has successfully performed many difficult operations. His practice is a large one and he is also assistant professor of gynecology and obstetrics at the University of Minnesota, having specialized in those branches of medical science, concerning which he is well informed. On the 27th of April, 1917, Dr. Simons was united in marriage to Miss Rae Laubach, of St. Paul, Minnesota, and they now have three children: Clarence Bertram, Marian Elizabeth and Arthur Mansfield. In matters of citizenship Dr. Simons is loyal and public-spirited, and during the World war he acted as medical examiner in connection with the aviation service and was also a member of the Hennepin county medical advisory board. His professional connections are with the Minnesota Gynecological & Obstetrical Society, the Hennepin County and Minnesota State Medical Societies, the American Medical Association and the American College of Surgeons, while he is also a member of Alpha Kappa Kappa, a medical fraternity. In the field of professional service he has made continuous progress, gleaning from comprehensive study and research and from practical experience valuable truths in connection with the science of medicine and surgery, and he has attained high rank among those whose skill is uniformly acknowledged.
