Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical Vol II, pg 791-792 WILLIAM YALE SMILEY William Yale Smiley, who has been actively and successfully engaged in the practice of law in Minneapolis since 1912, with the exception of a two-year period spent in the service of his country during the World war, is now a member of the firm of Trussell, Smiley & Collins of this city. He was born at Le Mars, Iowa, on the 7th of August, 1888, a son of William D. and Clara L. (Rounds) Smiley, who were natives of New York and of Wisconsin, respectively. The father, who devoted his attention to the milling business at Le Mars, Iowa, passed away in 1914. The mother makes her home in Minneapolis. William Y. Smiley obtained his more advanced education in the University of Minnesota, from which he was graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1909, and also in Yale University, which conferred upon him the degree of Master of Arts in 1910. Two years later he received the degree of LL. B. from the University of Minnesota, in which institution he had made specific preparation for his chosen calling, and was admitted to the bar in 1912. During the World war he spent fifteen months in France with the Eighth Field Artillery of the regular army and was commissioned a second lieutenant while overseas, having left this country as a private. He was mustered out at Camp Dodge in 1919. Prior to his military service Mr. Smiley was associated in law practice with Cob.b, Wheelwright & Dille, while at the present time he is a member of the firm of Trussell, Smiley & Collins, which enjoys an enviable reputation at the Minneapolis bar and is accorded an extensive clientage. Mr. Smiley belongs to both the Hennepin County and Minnesota State Bar associations and is widely recognized as an able young attorney of broad legal learning and growing power. On the 21st of June, 1916, Mr. Smiley was united in marriage to Miss Anita A. Atkinson, daughter of E. E. Atkinson, a well known merchant of Minneapolis. Mr. and Mrs. Smiley have a son, William Yale, Jr., whose birth occurred May 22, 1921. Fraternally Mr. Smiley is a Mason of high rank, having attained the thirty-second degree of the Scottish Rite and also belonging to Zuhrah Temple of the Mystic Shrine He is likewise a well known and popular member of the Minneapolis Athletic Club, the Lafayette Club, the Interlachen Country Club and the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
