Marion Daniel Shutter, D.D., LL.D.; Volume I - Shutter (Historical); volume II - Biographical; volume III - Biographical Vol II, pg 735 BROWN SYLVESTER SMITH Brown Sylvester Smith, practicing law. in Minneapolis, was born in Washington county, Arkansas, in 1864 and after the emancipation of the negroes he removed with his parents to Greene county, Missouri. His father had worked as a slave on a southern plantation previous to the Civil war. Mr. Smith's educational opportunities were very limited but he attended the public schools of Greene county for two years. In 1876 he removed to Springfield, Illinois, death having deprived him of both parents and he walked the entire distance. In 1883 he was graduated from one of the high schools of that city. In October, 1884, he became a law student at the University of Michigan, from which he won the LL. B. degree in 1886, and was admitted to practice before the supreme court of Michigan, also passing the state bar examination in Missouri. In 1887 he went to Kansas City, Kansas, and while there residing he was called to public office, serving as first assistant county attorney from 1899 until 1907. He was also a member of the city council for four years. Since 1907 he has made his home in Minneapolis and is now controlling a large and representative practice. On the 4th of September, 1890, Mr. Smith was united in marriage to Miss Laura B. Porter, of Greenfield, Iowa.
