Dr. Arthur Clarence Strachauer, professor and chief of the department of surgery of the University of Minnesota Medical School, was born in Minneapolis on the 1st of May, 1883, and is a son of Clarence and Dena (Darck) Strachauer, the former a native of Massachusetts, while the latter was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The family has been represented in America since early colonial days and some of its members participated in the Revolutionary war, enlisting from Connecticut. Arthur C. Strachauer pursued his education in the public schools until he had completed his high school course and then entered the University of Minnesota for training in his chosen profession, being graduated with the M. D. degree in 1908. He afterward attended the university at Berlin, Germany, in 1901-2, pursuing a special course in the sciences. In 1909-10 he was assistant surgeon in the Royal Surgical Hospital at Berlin and with thorough and comprehensive training received abroad he returned to his native land to enter upon the active practice of surgery in the spring of 1910. He formed a partnership with Dr. James E. Moore, one of the prominent surgeons of the Northwest, and this connection was maintained until the retirement of the senior partner. Since that time Dr. Strachauer has practiced independently. He is one of the founders of the Nicollet Clinic, located at No. 1009 Nicollet avenue. On returning from Europe he was made a member of the faculty of surgeons of the University of Minnesota Hospital. He has filled various positions on the faculty and was made professor and chief of the department of surgery in 1919. He is also professor of surgery in the Graduate School of Medicine, affiliated with the Mayo Foundation. He is a member of the American Medical Association, the Minnesota Academy of Medicine, the Minnesota Pathological Society, the Western Surgical Association and is also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is surgeon in chief to the University Hospital and surgeon to the Abbott, Northwestern, St. Mary's and St. Andrew's hospitals. On the 9th of June, 1909, Dr. Strachauer was married to Miss Gertrude Louise Hale, a daughter of Major W. D. Hale, a well known resident of Minneapolis. Dr. and Mrs. Strachauer have one son, Herman. Dr. Strachauer belongs to the Delta Kappa Epsilon and the Nu Sigma Nu fraternities and he also has membership in the Minneapolis Club.
