THOMPSON Paul J. Thompson was born on a farm near Rosendale, Wisconsin, November 14, 1875, a son of George W. and Cornelia H. (Jennings) Thompson. He received his education at Ripon College and the law school of the University of Minnesota. He finished his law course in 1901 and was admitted to the bar. In September, 1901, he began practice in the offices of James A. Peterson and George R. Smith. From 1905 to 1907 he was in partnership with George R. Smith under the firm name of Smith & Thompson. In May, 1919, the firm of Thompson, Hessian & Fletcher was organized, which firm is still in existence. Mr. Thompson was appointed acting county attorney in May, 1920, to serve for the balance of the term of court. After the entrance of the United States into the World war Mr. Thompson joined the Home Guards and was first sergeant of Company D. In 1918 he enlisted in the Y. M. C. A. service and was assigned to the Y. M. C. A. with the Italian army. He was stationed at Rome, Italy, arriving at Bologna in May, 1918, and at Rome in June, 1918. He was at the Asiago front at the battle of Vittorio Veneto. He was awarded the bronze medal of the Commune of Rome and a certificate of honor from the Inten-denza Generale of the Italian army at Bologna. Mr. Thompson returned to this coun­try in 1919. In the summer of 1922, Mr. Thompson and his sister, Miss Ruth Thomp­son, traveled extensively through western Europe. Along strictly professional lines Mr. Thompson holds membership in the Henne­pin County Bar Association, the Minnesota State Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. He was president of the Hennepin County Bar Association from 1920 to 1921 and he is now a member of the board of governors of the State Bar Association. For some time Mr. Thompson has been a trustee of the Ripon College and of the Linden Hills Congregational church, of which church he is a member. He belongs to the Hennepin County War Records Commission and the State Historical Society and for some time has been identified with the Hennepin County Child Wel­fare Board. He is likewise a member of the Commonwealth Club, the Civic & Com­merce Association, the Lincoln Club, the Calhoun Commercial Club, the Lake Harriet Commerical Club and the Minneapolis Curling Club. He is also one of the board of directors of the Lawyers Trust Company.
