B. TOMLINSON (Richard B. Tomlinson) Minneapolis numbers among her foremost business men and representative citizens R. B. Tomlinson, who since 1898 has been district manager for the Travelers Insurance Company, which business he conducts under the firm name of R. B. Tomlinson & Son. A native of Nevada, his birth occurred in Silver City, on the 17th of December, 1863, his parents being Richard B. and Amanda R. (Ames) Tomlinson. When he was but five years of age the family home was established in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In the acquirement of his education R. B. Tomlinson attended the public schools of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he continued to reside until about twenty-four years of age, when in 1887 he came to Minneapolis and for a time devoted his attention to the wholesale hat and cap business in this city. In 1898 he was made district manager for the Travelers Insurance Company of Hartford, Connecticut, and has since been active in this capacity, the period of his association with that corporation now covering a quarter of a century. Under his management the agency has grown to extensive proportions and in 1919 his son, Royal G. Tomlinson, was taken into partnership in the business, which is conducted under the firm name of R. B. Tomlinson & Son. They occupy well appointed offices in the Security building and have an office force of some one hundred and fifteen people, while their field force numbers about five hundred. R. B. Tomlinson is a business man of progressive spirit and unfaltering determination and the success he enjoys is the result of his own labors. Since attaining his majority Mr. Tomlinson has given his allegiance to the republican party and the principles for which it stands. Fraternally he is identified with the Masons, holding membership in Minneapolis Lodge, No. 19, A. F. & A. M.; St. John's Chapter, R. A. M.; Darius Commandery, K. T.; and Zuhrah Temple of the Mystic Shrine. He is an active contributor to the Rotary Club and to the Civic & Commerce Association and his religious faith is that of the Westminster Presbyterian church. He also belongs to the Westminster Club, the membership of which is limited to fifty, and he is connected with the Minneapolis Athletic Club, the Minneapolis Golf Club and the Automobile Club. During the period of his residence here he has made many friends, as he possesses the qualities that enable him to compel and retain the esteem of those who meet him in either a business or social way. In April, 1890, was celebrated the marriage of R. B. Tomlinson and Miss Carolyn Louise Powers and to their union one son has been born, Royal G., who received his early education in the public schools of Minneapolis and subsequently became a student in the University of Minnesota. Upon the outbreak of the World war he was quick to put all personal interests aside, enlisting in the United States Army Ambulance Service in September, 1917. He was assigned to the Minneapolis Corps and sent to Allentown, Pennsylvania, for nine months' training, after which he went overseas, going first to Genoa, Italy, where he remained for two months, while later he spent seven months on the St. Mihiel and Argonne fronts in active service. After returning to the United States he received his honorable discharge at Fort Snelling, in May, 1919, and immediately came back to Minneapolis to join his father in the insurance business, under the firm style of R. B. Tomlinson & Son. He is a young man of genial and pleasing personality and innate business ability. He married Miss Mildred McEnary, and both he and his wife enjoy an enviable position in the social circles of the city. He belongs to the Rotary and Westminster clubs of Minneapolis.
