TORGERSON Martin J. Torgerson of the Twin City Creamery Company, butter manufacturers of Minneapolis, was born in Allendale, Minnesota, on the 19th of October, 1881, and is a son of James and Anna (Phyre) Torgerson, both of whom were natives of Norway. The father left that country on the 42th of April, 1865, and Anna Phyre departed from the Land of the Midnight Sun a year later. 'They were married in this country and settled on a farm in Steele county, Minnesota, where James Torgerson resided until his death, which occurred in 1905. The youthful experiences of Martin J. Torgerson were those of the farm bred boy, who early becomes familiar with every phase of agricultural life. His education was acquired in the schools of Allendale, Minnesota, and he afterward learned the trade of butter making, which he has followed since reaching the age of nineteen. He worked in various plants, gaining wide experience and acquiring intimate and accurate knowledge of every phase of the business. In 1917 he joined the Twin City Creamery Company, which he and his brother, C. R. Torgerson, now own, having bought out the interests of all others in the business. They are strictly butter manufacturers and sell all their product to jobbers and retailers. Their special brand, which has become famous, is known as the Liberty brand and their creamery produces more than half a million pounds of butter annually. The excellence of their product insures a ready sale and the business is now one of mammoth proportions. Mr. Torgerson was united in marriage to Miss Anna Hage and they have become the parents of four children: Adelaide, Kerma, Jerome and Marlen-two daughters and two sons. The religious faith of the family is that of the Lutheran church, while in his political belief Mr. Torgerson is a republican, giving stanch support to the party because of his belief in its principles as factors in good government, yet never seeking nor desiring office as a reward for party fealty. He concentrates his energies and attention upon the interests of the Twin City Creamery Company, which under the control of himself and brother has become one of the important productive enterprises of this character in Minneapolis.
